Seems on the face of it he may have been illegitimate. As his mum was still a Purchon he would be entitled to be that surname. She doesn't appear to have registered his birth though.

Where are they in 1861!!

So both men dead before John William Purchon [1857 - ?] born.

looks like John William Purchon's parents were John Purchon and Mary Wood
