- Manaia The atmosphere heavy from smoke from bush fires when at 2am on the 15th January 1897, the Manaia stranded on a reef off the mouth of the Oeo River. The Manaia was a screw steamer of 81 tons gross, under the command of Captain George Archibald Simpson. The Court of Inquiry held the master responsible for going to sea with his vessel improperly equipped, and for negligent navigation. It is probably the boiler of the ?Manaia? that can be seen wedged in rocks off the mouth of the Oeo River at very low tides. Probably the anchor found in the 1960s in the same vicinity and now on the memorial to the crew or ?Lizzie Bell? at the Pihama Cemetery, belongs to this ship and not the ?Lizzie Bell.? |

Ooh Choccy - looks interesting. There was an article in the recent FH magazine about a shipwreck in Oz and there are probably some sites and reference in there. I will go and dig it out. |

Hi Anne - thank you - I have most of that so will check the other bits. Elsworth's father was not called Elsworth - so the other Elsworth is an uncle. It seems to be given to one of the boys in every generation that I've found - interesting name to search for I'm quite enjoying it all! |

Hi Ladykira - thanks for looking for me. I think the surname is a bit of a problem in all of this. |

So maybe the return trip I found was either his last trip or after he'd stopped being a ship's steward? He married a year or so later. |

If he was down as a steward, then maybe he was working away as a Ships steward. |
