Can anyone help me to find an entry on 1871 Census for John James Wellings born c1840 and his wife Martha Harriet (or Harriet Martha) born c 1832 in Greenwich.

I found their son Frederick age 1 but he was the first on a sheet so assume his parents were on the previous sheet ! I have tried by just searching on their names but ........... There must be a way of finding it but as a comparative 'newbie' to this don't know it.The address was Park Row (also unsure of number)
Thanks
Linda

Linda Report 8 Sep 2011 17:12

In February this year I asked for help finding John J WELLINGS , my GG Grandfather in the 1871 Census, I was new at things and hadn't thought of looking under different spelling and was very grateful for the help I got then. I hope it's ok to start another topic for him.
I can't find any trace of him in either 1841,1851 or 1871( before he married). I do know that he was born in Brighton , his parents were John WELLINGS c 1800 and Ann and had at least one sibling , a sister Anne Maria b 1832 also in Brighton.
There were other children born in Brighton to a John and Ann WELLINGS between1843 and 1848 but not sure they ' belong'
Thanks in anticipation !!

Whoops !Thanks Flick

I don't think the info on the 1861 census is the right one as far as I can see, only recognise one of the children ie Harriet M. although father's age is about right

Linda, the 1861 surname has been corrected by an Ancestry user - possibly researching the same family. You could perhaps contact him.

Linda Report 8 Sep 2011 17:41

The two for 1851 and 1861 look good , PricklyHolly. On his son's marriage cert he was down as being a 'gentleman's servant' so it fits.
Real shame can't find 1841 to see if I can see his siblings

Ann, he died in 1875 ( fell ? jumped out of a window at The Royal Naval College , Greenwich !)

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 8 Sep 2011 17:49

His occupation on the 1851 and 1861 is "Butler"

Linda

Linda Report 8 Sep 2011 17:52

His wife appears on the 1861 !! Martha Hinchman - actually it's HINXMAN

Linda

Linda Report 8 Sep 2011 17:55

Be interesting to find out who he 'butled' for !! The Browne's whoever they were

Linda

Linda Report 8 Sep 2011 18:03

How do I go about that ?

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 8 Sep 2011 18:12

In the 1861 he is the "Butler" for Bartholomew G Browne..........who's occupation looks like............Merch S America Trade.
Residence: 8 Westbourne Cresent, Kensington.

Martha's occupation is "Ladies Maid"

Thanks,I have that certificate.
What I was hoping to find was evidence to confirm where his father , also John, was born. I think he was from Buckinghamshire but can't be sure , if so he has a brother Daniel who married in Brighton and had his children there, as did John.
I was hoping to see evidence of his Buckinghamshire birth from the 1841 so will have to keep searching, maybe using his sister Anne Maria and various spellings of Wellings !!
Thanks so much for your help
Linda
