I wonder if anyone can help, my great uncle James Copneigh 1910 - 1941 married a Joan Ann Maurice in April 1941 ( I have a copy of the marriage cert), From a newspaper article "Daily Mirror" 9 August 1941, it turns out this marriage was bigamus (his wife was already married to David Pearse Maurice in June 1935 - I have a copy of this cert). On the first marriage the bride is under the name of "Florence Lock". My great uncle committed suicide due to the circumstances and the newspaper article says "the girl is awaiting trial on a charge of bigamy. At the police court proceedings she was described as Joan Ann Maurice, alias Florence Maurice, nee Lock".

I can't seem to get any further information, I have obtained a further newspaper article from "Cambridge Daily News" 8 August 1941 which covered the inquest in Cambridge.

Does anyone know if I can find out what happened to Florence/Joan Ann?

Florence first husband married again in November 1947 and his condition (on marriage cert) states "formerly the husband of florence maurice, formerly lock from whom he ??????" - can't read the rest of it - very bad writing.

Please can anyone help?

was there an age given for Florence/Joan on the marriage certificate?

Did it give any father's details/occupation for her?

If we can build a clearer picture we might be able to find out what happened.

Hi, on marriage cert 1 - florence lock is 18 and a spinster, her father is listed as Ernest Walter Lock omibus inspector - address at time of marriage 46 Castletown road, west kensington
NB her husband david pearse maurice, age 27, father david blake maurice (deceased), Lieutenant-Colonel, (retired)


marriage cert 2 - joan ann maurice is 24 years, a spinster, she lists her father on this cert as david blake maurice (deceased), lieutenant-colonel (retired) - which you will see is actually her father in laws details.

in the daily mirror article her "defence" was she believed her first husband to have been killed in an air raid. I was therefore very surprised to see on the 2nd cert, she stated the above details.

Also realised, I should have mentioned, that our family name is actually Copneich not Copneigh, we assume James must have changed his name properly as Copneigh is the name on his war grave in ealing cemetry. He was in the RAF and stationed in Cambridge at the time of his suicide.

Just had a quick look on genes reunited indexed marriages cannot find anything listed for Ernest Walter Lock.

I think marriages after 1909 did not show second names, just initials, so you would have to search for Ernest W.
I was using free bmd.
