I'm trying to find my paternal grandmother. She was married on 21st March 1920 to my grandfather (John Hardy) in Paddington, London. The Marriage Certificate says she was 19 (my grandfather 35). Her father's name was Arthur Metcalfe. Her occupation was a domestic. I also have a copy of my father's birth certificate showing his mother to be Christina Hardy (formerly Metcalfe). I also have a record from the 1901 Census showing a Christina Metcalfe (aged 11 months) living with her father, Arthur Metcalfe, and mother, Fanny Jane Metcalfe (nee Simpson). In the 1911 Census it shows Arthur, Fanny Jane, Irene, Christina, Sybil and Mary. I can find birth entries for all the sisters but nothing for Christina Metcalfe. The story goes that she seemed to 'disappear' when my father and his brother & sister were young children & was not seen again. I can also find no death entry but I guess she could have re-married? |
