In 1871 there is a Charles born St Pancras wth a father Samuel! Although he states he's single was that a cover up??? Would explain why Charlotte is using her maiden name in 1901.

Someone has a tree on Anc*stry with his father as Charles........ so having another look now;

Definately looks like "W" as the middle intial for this Robert............ but it just goes to show how important that birth certificate is for him. There is no birth registration showing for Robert Westmore born C.1899

Now I can't see a birth for the above Robert in Essex........... so maybe this is your Grandfather??? The birth certificate will either confirm or not.

Sorry, but it's easy to find parental info (his mother at least) ......buy the birth cert

Yes I have his birth, but just cant find him on the census for 1901. Really want to trace who his parents were and where he was before he had to live in the childrens home.

Have you looked for/found his birth registration on freebmd?

Hi all,
My granddad Robert Samuel Leggett is in the 1911 census as an inmate in Andover childrens home.
Date of admission 1904, date of discharge-1913.
But we cannot find him anywhere in the 1901 census.

There is also an age record saying that they retrieved the date of birth from the child.!!!!!!!

How can we find out where he was before the childrens home and who were his parents and what happened to them.
This is one family mystery we are really having trouble resolving.

Any help would be gratefully recieved.
