Well, the children were named Nightingale on the 1851 census and Jane Sarah didn't marry William Hughes until 1853.

Since Jane Sarah's maiden name is Nightingale George Joseph and any siblings would be illegitimate so not much chance of finding father's name, I'm afraid.

I think after much reading of records, etc.....it would appear that the children are infact "Hughes" and not "Nightingale"....I'm still wondering why on the census it says "Nightingale" though?! :S

Yes, very common for children to take stepfather's name. However they usually used their legal name at marriage.

Oh, I've just remembered something else I was going to say....
My connection is through George Joseph Nightingale, who is Jane Sarah's son. But is it normal that when someone remarried, etc... in those days that the children take on the new partners name? If so, that would then explain how in some census records he's "Nightingale" and in others he's "Hughes".... :S
I'm just wondering now how to go about trying to find his and his siblings father.....

I see he was a widower when he married. Are you sure the children aren't from his first marriage? Although Jane Sarah was 37 when they married so it's possible.

The only information I have for William Hughes is that he was 64 years old when he married Jane Sarah Nightingale on 04/07/1853 (so DOB c.1789) -Tower Hamlets, Middlesex.
On the marriage Banns it lists William's father also as William Hughes, but deceased.
I have children for him and Jane as: Charles, George, Jonathan, Maria, Eliza and Alfred.
I really want to try and find out more information about him and his parents, etc.... but I've come a bit stuck at the moment.
If it's of any help to anyone, I know that part of the family came from the Bethnal Green/Stepney/Ratcliff area London/Middlesex.
