In 1913, my dad's oldest cousin emigrated to Montreal.
In 1914, his uncle and the rest of the family joined him.

After WW1 broke out, his 2 oldest cousins joined the CEF
MASSIE, CHARLES PATERSON 21/12/1894 132464
MASSIE, JOSEPH 03/05/1892 BDR 303020
[I have their attestation papers]

It's the middle cousin that's of interest - here's his CWGC entry

What I'ld like to know is what info does the record and image of this Ancestry record hold?

Unfortunately the original is an image of an entry card that gives no detail of his family or former address ect

Jonesey, T - thanks for that info.

I was aware he was killed in the trenches, but I didn't know where.
The battalion war diaries only identify the trenches as 55, 59 & 77, together with a trench map reference.
On Sept 4th, "heavy shelling continued the whole of the day on the Front and Support Lines", and "the Battalion also suffered a heavy Counter Attack".
The net result was that the battalion held the line, but with abt 300 casualties of which 15% were fatal.
The nominal strength of a Canadian battalion was abt 1250, but I doubt the bn was up to strength.



Margee - I was aware of the pic, but you weren't to know that, so thanks for calling my attention to it.
I was also aware I had another variable spelling issue in my tree. I haven't gotten the images from SP yet, but the IGI gives his mum as

This is also the spelling in 1891. However, on 23/12/1916 at Montréal (Presbyterian Calvin), we find

Enterrement: Elizabeth Patterson wife of Joseph Massie died at her late residence...


So I guess I'll add Paterson/Patterson to Johnston/Johnstone and Slessor/Slesser
