Find Ancestors

Hi,
I have been to Barking and foundnthe following

Jane Sarah Nightingale baptised 12/04/1818 parents William and Jane Nightingale

Elizabeth Ann Nightingale baptised 27/03/1825 same parents

Maria Louise Nightingale baptised 01/02/1829

William George Nightingale baptised 08/05/1832 parents William and Jane Margaret.

But at the same time a daughter Caroline Rosetta Nightingale same parents baptised with William.
As William and Jane seem to have their children baptised soon after birth this could mean he was a twin, but I can't find any other reference to her anywhere.

Also found buried in St Margarets Churchyard
William Nightingale late of St Pauls Shadwell who departed this life November 15th 1778 aged 53
Mrs Ann Nightingale who died 21/06/1787 age 65.

If not, then I'm wondering if the Sarah on the first one *could* be Jane Sarah, as I know it's not uncommon for people to be referred to by their middle names in those days......

I thought as much! I think the surname changes of her children kept confusing me and was leading me to believe that she may have been married before.

The 1841 entry you've posted above is again yet more proof that her DOB years keep changing through entries, leading to MORE confusion!!

I suspect that this may be her mother. There are several other Nightingale's with her and several family forenames seem to match with Jane Sarah's own children's forenames

Quite possibly, Jonesy....

George Joseph is my Great Great Grandfather.

Now I'm even more confused!!! So he was born a "Hughes" then a few years later in the census he was a "Nightingale" and then 10 years later he was a "Hughes" again?!?!?!

According to census records, she was born in Barking, Essex and her DOB years seem to vary through census records/marriage banns, etc.... from 1816-1820.

I have also tried varients on her name....Jane Sarah, Sarah Jane, etc.....

On her marriage banns entry for her marriage to William Hughes in 1853, it lists her father as "William Nightingale".
I am struggling to find more details on her father and am yet to find out anything about her mother.

Also, before she married William Hughes, she had children called: Charles W, George Joseph and Maria Agnes.
In the 1851 census, these children have the surname "Nightingale", but in the 1861 census after her marriage to William Hughes in 1853, the children still at home now have the surname "Hughes".

I'm struggling to find information on any previous marriages that Jane may have had and also on who the father of the 3 children is.


If anyone can help me out here, I would be very grateful, as always!
