I am trying to find out detail of Wm Sands who sailed from Liverpool to New York, departed 30th July 1904 on board the Campania. His ticket number was 7476. He was aged 49 and was a labourer.

Are there any records of people as they landed in New York and did the Americans have a census system like in the UK ?

This is a long shot as William Sands was my ggrandfather who disappeared off the English Census records after 1901 when he was a widower and the children were put in to homes. I have never found a britsh Death record for him.

He was born 1859 in Openshaw, Manchester england

Any help appreciated

Had a look on the Aug and Sept arrivals but no sign of him or others that were travelling with him on the outgoing manifest

Any idea how long the journey would have taken ?

Many thanks everyone for looking.

My ggrandfather William Sands last trace was in 1901 census in Middlesbrough, which will have been North Yorkshire in those days. He is shown as a widower.
I have never been able to trace him since then these last few years, really is a brick wall.
I have checked out all the death records in Britain but no luck.

Also, I should have double checked my facts first. He was born in 1859.

Cheers

John

MC

Yes, that is my family. Walter was my grandad. Maria, his mother died soon after that, so did Wm Hy. and they were buried in paupers unmarked grave in Middlesbrough.
Walter was put in to a boys home in Middlesbrough and I have never been able to find out what happenned to his dad, William. I think he was illiterate as he could only make his mark with an X.
That is the last piece of my family tree that I cannot complete after many years trying.

The last US census released was for 1930. You can search at:
https://www.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1®ion=NORTH_AMERICA

Just like the UK, there's no uniform system for registering BMDs, and each country (or colony, now state) sets its own rules, so to find a d.cert, you'll need to know which state he died in.
