Advice re a census look up that I am doing!

Hello,

I am working on my Great Grandfathers side of Family tree and seem to have some slightly conflicting information!

My great grandfather (Frederick Boyce) was aged 44 years old when he married his 2nd wife (my great gran; Katie Dunn) in Oct 1922, Epsom-Surrey.
Based on his age-I have thus worked out that he was born approx 1877-1878.

So that I can work on his side of the family tree-I used his name and approx date of birth (based on his age on marriage certificate) and also the name of his father Thomas Boyce (general labourer) and did a UK census look up.

I have found their names on both the 1881 and 1891 cenus. My great grandfather Frederick was 1 of several children.(mother Louise Boyce).
The first thing that has thrown me is that his date of birth was about 1875 (however I calculated that it should be around 1877/1878).

**My first query -Is it normal to have slightly different information in terms of ones date of Birth on a Census record?**

The 2nd thing that has confused me is that the 1891 census (with same family details) shows he was born in Cheam, Surrey -yet the 1881 census states that he was born in Croydon, Surrey.
An additional census I have looked up, in 1901- shows him living with his 1st wife Alice > states that he was born in Croydon, Surrey.

**My second query- is it normal to have slightly different locations of birth of a person on different year census?

Hope this makes sense?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

M.
:-)

The first census they appear on as a child I have found to be the most accurate on age.

Sometimes place of birth is given as where they were living at the time of census or where they moved to as a child so did not know their correct place of birth

One of my rellies only aged 8 years between each census she was on

Births Dec 1874 (>99%)

Boyce Frederick Croydon 2a 198

Perhaps he knocked a couple of years off his age when he married

Hello, Thank you for your replies!

*Glitter Baby-Thanks for the info and that makes sense about the location being possibly connected to where person lived at time of Census (rather than we they were born)!
Cheers for the Birth look up also! Yes I was thinking the same thing re his age!!
I hope to order a Birth Certificate soon, which will hopefully give me some more info!

*Ginny-Cheers for tip!

*Ann of Green Gables- Thank you for the 1901 census info! This address matches up with the address in Sutton that my great grandfather was residing at when he married for 2nd time in 1922!

I am not sure if there is a connection with the 1881 census as I have his father listed as a Thomas Boyce! Cheers though for suggestion!

*Andrew- wow, really. Goes to show that the census records are not always 100% accurate!

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to read my post and assist with my query!

Maz x :-)
