The birth of the child would have been registered. In Scotland the child of unmarried parents would be registered in the mother's surname and also the father's if he was named on the registration. If you haven't found his birth registered as James then perhaps he was registered using a different christian name. I think it is really a matter of looking at all the births for the relevant surname in the correct period. This could be very expensive if the child was born after 1910 as these aren't available to view online and certificates have to be bought. The other alternative would be to take a trip to the Scotlandspeople centre in Edinburgh where for a daily charge of £15 you can view as many register entries as time permits. Although you cannot take printouts of births after 1910, marriages 1935 and deaths 1960, you can view these and make notes. |
