The birth of the child would have been registered. In Scotland the child of unmarried parents would be registered in the mother's surname and also the father's if he was named on the registration. If you haven't found his birth registered as James then perhaps he was registered using a different christian name. I think it is really a matter of looking at all the births for the relevant surname in the correct period. This could be very expensive if the child was born after 1910 as these aren't available to view online and certificates have to be bought. The other alternative would be to take a trip to the Scotlandspeople centre in Edinburgh where for a daily charge of £15 you can view as many register entries as time permits. Although you cannot take printouts of births after 1910, marriages 1935 and deaths 1960, you can view these and make notes.

hi all

this is a very long shot but hope someone might point me in the right direction

my great grandmother was born 1895 she had 2 step sisters
aggie and maggie (neither ever married)
however in 1908 maggie had a little girl who was brought
up as my grandmothers sister

the other sister aggie had a little boy
he was adopted/sent to quarrrier homes
and sent to canada

my problem is no one knows the year he was born
or when he went overseas
i can find no record of his birth have searched
scotlands people from 1895 to 1930
i have looked at the shipping list but because we dont know his age
its like looking for a needle in a haystack

we think he was born in the aberdeen area and was in the quarrier homes in glasgow area
sorry its so long
oh i forgot we believe his name to be james gordon

any help we be greatly appreciated
