Any ideas how to access records for national adjudicators for england and wales in the period 1940 to 60's
or records of brass band conductors.
My father Edward Emmett also know as Harry( DOB1906) is the musician here but cannot get records.
He was also in the Central band of the RAF and trained at kneller Hall, London.

If you find out that he did the bandmasters course at KH then most class /year photo's are hung there.

Your posts elsewhere on the net from 2009 indicate that you're looking for his family -- that part has been successful? but they have not been able to tell you more?

Not too clear what you are looking for.

Someone who is confirmed next of kin could surely access his military records by providing proof of his death, I would think.

My impression is that Susan is trying to find out about her Father's life as a musician post RAF service but the main problem is the start date. Serving in WW2 he must have left after 1945 but he would be 39 years of age and could have been a career server rather than called up for war service. He may not have left the RAF until the 1950's.

susan Report 8 Jun 2011 17:56

All I have is that he was in the central band of the RAF based at Uxbridge, He played the Trumpet and Horn and was still serving in around 1947 when he left his wife.
My sister remembers him in the RAF band then and based there, but cannot remember any thing else.
I had no luck with Kneller Hall, and could not get link to others..
So feeling lost with this he was a great man with his music.
My dad the stranger sadly, I had seen him play and also he played the organ and other key boards and conducted.
Sxx :-)

Thank you for all your time and help <3

You are certain this is your father

Births Jun 1906
Emmett Edward Camberwell 1d 870

and not, for instance

Births Dec 1905
Emmett Edward George Uxbridge 3a 54

?

I don't see a death record for Edward Emmett born 1906, no middle name.

We just don't know what you already know -- like whether you know when and where he died ...

susan

susan Report 8 Jun 2011 19:09

yes Edward Emmett born 1906 is my father as I have his cert, mother Jane Hood and Father Edward Emmett he died
Oct 1974, I was 17 at the time. he was often called Harry Emmett I remember, but Harry is not on his cert or my birth cert, when he married my mother after Rolls, he put Edward Henry Emmett I have the marriage cert

He wasin the Royal Air Force Association newport branchas the Treasurer of the entertainments section its in a reference that was given to my father in May 1963 by the Hon Treasurer, it also says he is an excellent conducter and in latter years a National Adjudicator the person was also the Headmaster of TROEDRHIWGWAIR CTY P SCHOOL TREDEGAR MON
I have contacted the Royal Airforce Assoc in Newport and sent my details and his and got no response, this was some time ago .

:-D does this help, surely there is a record else where of his musical career Thank you every one

Not sure what the PM you sent meant ...

I dunno, susan. If there's a record of his musical career somewhere, I guess it isn't anywhere where anyone else can find it.

Most people who died years before the internet was born didn't leave a lot of traces to be found on line, you know.

You are his daughter. He is deceased. Have you found out whether you can apply for his military records? I think I asked this a few posts back, but I don't see an answer.

for info:

Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1974
Age at Death: 68

Susan although it is unlikely that anyone in the same age group who served with your Father is still alive a younger member of the RAF Band may remember him. Suggest you post on this site but please include both Harry and Edward as Harry may have been his nickname:

Forces Reunited - Find Army Friends, Find RAF Friends, Find ...
Offers a means of meeting up with old forces friends, service pals, veterans and comrades.

www.forcesreunited.org.uk/ - 50k

RAF archive material from 1940's onwards is on the Flight magazine website (you should be able to find any promotion he may have had):

www.flightglobal.com

I will look for music hall sites.

susan, you're not a kid, couldn't you try to be a little clearer?

I asked whether you had investigated getting your father's military records.

I don't understand how "I asked and did not get a response" is an answer to that.

I google

uk military records

and immediately I get

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/britisharmysoldierafter1913.htm

which refers me to

Service records (1920-present)
Visit the Veterans UK website for information about how to request
a summary of a service recorda document recording the career
of an individual in the armed forces from the Ministry of Defence.
These are not available to members of the general public, but
next of kin may request access to them.

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

Did you do this??

Under the scheme, and in recognition of the duty of care owed
to the family of the deceased subject, for a period of 25 years
following the date of death of the subject and without the consent
of the Next of Kin, MOD will disclose only: surname; forename;
rank; service number; regiment/corps; place of birth; age; date
of birth; date of death where this occurred in service; the date
an individual joined the service; the date of leaving; good conduct
medals (i.e. Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (LS&GCM)),
any orders of chivalry and gallantry medals (decorations of valour)
awarded, some of which may have been announced in the
London Gazette.

After this period, and if it is held, in addition MOD will disclose
without the requirement for Next of Kin consent: the units in which
he/she served; the dates of this service and the locations of those
units; the ranks in which the service was carried out and details
of WWII campaign medals.

etc.

Sorry if I made you fed up, I have a problem with dyslexia and stuggle at times, I am not a child I know but 54, I have tried to find out from the RAF and they did not help, this was from a card given to me a couple of years ago at the National archives at Kew. I rang the number on the card and spoke to someone who wanted my fathers permission evenwhen I said he died in 1974, maybe he was new.
Thank you for all your help I am really grateful, all I want to do is find out about my fathers career and life as he kept it a secret from me.
I had contact from Kneller Hall who have no record of him.
I recieved no reply fom the brass band web site, :-)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jun 2011 22:29

susan, we could all post what we want on the internet. That wouldn't get it for us.

http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

That is where you go to order service records. Your father died more than 25 years ago now, so you should have no problem ordering the records.

Maybe someone who is good at doing things on line would do this for you?

I don't mean to be harsh, but just continuing to post what you want really isn't going to produce results. You will have to do what has to be done, to get what is available.

By the way, I know they don't make it easy. My dad wrote from Canada about 10 years ago, trying to find out about his father's military service. He got a very unhelpful letter back saying that the office where he had written didn't handle those things anymore and he had to write somewhere else, as if he should already know this, and not even telling him where to go. I couldn't find anything on line at the time and I dragged my feet ... and my dad died a few months later. At least now I know we would likely not have been able to get the records then, but I felt pretty bad about it, and I was really not impressed with the lack of help my dad, who was over 70, was given.

Why do I feel like a child being told off, I have asked other places and thats the RAF and the RAFA and got no where, I do not expect people to do all the work for me and I have tried hard to find out information over the years but all the people of my fathers age are dead or unable to remember, I am very grateful for all everyone has done to help me find out things and I respect you all do this in your own time, you are all very skilled at this.
So sorry if I have caused any upset and seemed lazy.
Thank you for all the help
Susan. :-)
