Find Ancestors

Hi...I am trying to find some info on Finlay Elder.....born 1858 in Shebster, Reay, Caithness. His father was John Elder, mother Catherine Elder (born Mackay)

The last thing I have on him is still living at Shebster in the 1871 Scottish census...aged 13. There is no record of him on any later census and no death record in Scotland.

Yes...this is correct. It is the last census record (or any record) I can find on him

Sorry, can find no sign of him at all. Have tried SP for marriages and deaths but no joy. Am posting this as the only thing I have found that may be him but can't find him in 1881. He's not with his family.

Asa all births had to be registered in Scotland after 1855 ,and your Finlay is the only one on the IGI ,guess it is the same.They have a habit in Scotland of adding a middle name later.

Hi...have checked the New Zealand electoral registers and have now found everything up to his death in 1938.

Only thing is I could not find him in the 1885 register but an earlier post on here says there was a Mr F C Elder went to Australia from Dunedin, New Zealand in 1884 so that could be him.

Can anyone tell me how to find him in Australia electoral registers or if there is any about that time and also details of his return to New Zealand from Australia as he is back in New Zealand in time for the 1890 electoral register.....Thanks

Hi...thanks for above...looks like his army career was quite brief though as found William John Calder Elder in the 1919 New Zealand electoral register, living in Ardgowan, New Zealand and working as a labourer. Dont have anything else on him though until his death in New Zealand aged 95 in 1992, as havent yet had the chance to check the electoral registers under his name. yet.

Hi Helen...thanks for above...have already got these...Jessie Calder was born 1st Jan 1871 (the 2000th birth in New Zealand that year) and died on 3rd Oct 1949. Have managed to find the birth and death years for Finlay Elder, his wife Jessie and their 5 children. Just need to find out if any of the 5 children got married, have family etc and what happened to Finlay Elder between 1884 and 1890.
