does anybody know how to find out a persons fathers first name without looking at the birth cert please

If the person was born after sep quarter 1911, his mother's maiden name would be given on the birth gro.;;Then you'd had to look for a marriage by the mother's maiden name and his father's surname.

Try freebmd.

If the mother's maiden name is the same as the child's, there is a good chance that she wasn't married and the father wasn't named.

If the birth was before Sep Q 1911, there is a chance that the child would be on the 1911 census, which would tell you how long the parents had been married. Even if there is only the mother listed, look at the original as sometimes widows put down length of marriage which was then crossed out.

But as you say, the only sure way is to purchase the BC.
