Newfoundland wasn't part of Canada until 1949, so Canadian closure laws on pre-confederation censuses don't apply.

A useful site is http://ngb.chebucto.org/

Margaret I have nothing to add at this point I just wanted to mark this thread since you'd been in touch re your Vail/Young thread.

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1269628

This is the link where you can find the obituary alviegal gave

http://ngb.chebucto.org/Newspaper-Obits/tele-obits-jun06.shtml

I'm just wondering whether the actual text could be removed from here since it contains the names of very young children, for example.

There was also a memorial published in 2009

http://ngb.chebucto.org/Newspaper-Obits/tele-memorials-jun09.shtml

T in Middx is referring to a family tree at www.ancestry.co.uk

If you go here

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1030

and search for the name Wallace Parrell without any other information

you will find 3 trees with his name. To contact the tree owners you need to subscribed to Ancestry, but you can take out a 14-day free subscription to do that, just be sure to include your email address when you send messages.

I think we sometimes think if it's at Ancestry, it must be old. ;)

(Or if it's Canadian, it's just alien!)

Margaret, you can go to

www.canada411.ca

and search for the surname PARRILL spelled like that in NL, to find the listing if you want it.

Janey will all my Canadian Ancestor's in both threads be from Ireland original ?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 May 2011 01:50

Heavens, Margaret, I have no idea! ;)

There is a very large Irish presence in Newfoundland. But there were also English and Scottish immigration.

The question would be how far back your roots in Newfoundland go. You might have one line going back a long way, on one side, marrying more recent arrivals; on one side your people might have arrived much more recently; etc.

There are some figures on ethnicity here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Newfoundland_and_Labrador

-- about 200,000 English, 100,000 Irish, 30,000 Scottish ... the problem is that 270,000, more than half the population, said "Canadian", which isn't an ethnicity and is a dumb answer.

The figures here are a little different:

http://www.statcan.gc.ca/c1996-r1996/feb17-17fev/oe1nl-eo1tnl-eng.htm

So the odds are that some of your ancestors were Irish and some were from England and/or Scotland. The whole thing won't be easy to work out, but you have one of the more interesting situations, genealogy-wise. ;)

I really would post on the discussion board at Newfoundland's Grand Banks, just give the basics you know for your earliest people in Nfld (e.g. Walter Vail of Little Island Cove and his parents, and how you have seen a tree with his grandmother Goudie's family) and ask for some help and advice for what to do next!

Also, if you don't know the person who has Wallace and Lucy Agnes in their tree at Ancestry, you should at least take out a 14-day free trial subscription there and contact that person (be sure to give your email address).

I went to the 1921 census at chebucto.org and searched for Lucy in St John's West -- the 1945 census says she was born in St John's East, but that isn't in the list. You can't narrow the search by age, very unfortunately.

There was none born Nov 1919 (the census does give month and year of birth).

I also tried Agnes in St John's West.

So I just tried Lucy for all of Nfld. There are 25 pages of results. You could do that search and read down each page looking for Lucy born in Nov 1919! It wouldn't take so terribly long, but better you than me. And although that's the birthdate given for her in that Ancestry tree, she wouldn't have been 27 at the 1945 census in that case, she would have been 25 ... so that might be a pointless search anyway.

I see one on the first page of results, for example:

Displaying the AUSTIN family from Holyrood South!
AUSTIN Mary F Wife Married 1881 Feb 40 Holyrood South
AUSTIN Leonard M Son Single 1915 Oct 6 Holyrood South
AUSTIN Stephen M Son Single 1917 Dec 4 Holyrood South
AUSTIN Lucy F Daughter Single 1919 Nov 2 Holyrood South
AUSTIN Pt. M Head Married 1878 Sept 43 Holyrood South

That Lucy is 16 in the 1935 census, which is slightly off, she should be 15, so who knows, maybe she just aged rapidly as some did in censuses. ;)
