I wonder if anyone can help me. I have still not managed to get the death certificate, for William Swift, he was born I think on 30th Dec 1853 ,Ashton in Ashton in Makerfield, he was a plasterer, and in 1911 he was at 11 Sankey Street, Earlstown Lancashire, shown as a widower agw 58, with 3 daughters and a son at home, can anyone help me at all. Anne.

Hello Anne, is this the record?:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1915

Name: William Swift
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1852
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1915
Age at Death: 63
Registration district: Ashton Under Lyne
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 8d
Page: 558

When you say you haven't been able to get the death certificate, is that because you can't find the registration so that you can order it?

I don't think so Ashton under Lyne is not near where he was living in 1911

Anne

Somewhere along the line I think he may have been in his 80's when he died, but I have had no luck.

Ok, realise different Ashtons.

What about this:

Deaths Sep 1929
Swift William 75 Wigan 8c 97

What have you already found and discounted?

Was he alive at any of his children's marriages?

Just a moment while I check my paperwork, I have actually applied for a
couple of certificates but was not charged obviusly it was not him

Ok I actually went to see some graves in St James Church Haydock, I was told there was a William Swift in there buried in 1938, age 80 yrs, but they were not sure of the exact age.

Hmm, it's tricky - there are quite a few William Swifts in Lancs and he may well have moved after 1911.

Thankyou for those, I I may have applied for the first one, the second looks promising though, where did you find this information? Anne

Anne, best site for most searches is FreeBMD - http://www.freebmd.org.uk

Trouble with death records is the age can often be out - the data is only as reliable as that given by the person registering the death.

Many thanks for your help. I will have a look on there, Regards Anne.

Yes you are right about the informant, It was the Vicar that told me a William was in the grave, but his name was not on it. that is why it only said 80 perhaps, the last one looks interesting as it is 1937. Anne
