Incoming passengers? Thomas Mullane 1871

Hi, how do I search for people incoming on ships? My great-great grandfather Thomas Mullane was born in India in c1871 and was living in Ellesmere Port in 1911 according to the census.
Can I find out when he came to England?
He was somewhat dark skinned with dark hair, would being born in India mean he was necessarily part indian?
How common was it at the time to have mixed parentage?

Any help much appreciated.

Ruth

Would he have been travelling with anyone? Names of parents, siblings and wife might help

There is this one but no other info really that would help?

Thank you so much everyone.
Does it sound like his parents Thomas and Ellen were British?
Were his parents born in India?

Does the fact that the record of his baptism has been kept mean that his father was in the army and a British Citizen?

His records show that he had been a Printer ? for 2 years at the 'Railway Shops'.

His religion was C of E.

There is an address for his mother which is crossed out and very hard to read but it looks ssomething like:

Mrs. Ellen Mullane
GO (c o?) Cuplar Dubisson Lincoln Regt.
Luknow, Bengal
(So it does look as though his father was in the army?)

He served in India and South Africa and was discharged in Wrexham around 1902 and was going to live at 2 Lime St., Ellesmere Port.

Wow, she certainly was young! Though I have heard of very young marriages happening in India.
The name Grey doesn't sound asian, I wonder if they were what was called British Indian which was mixed race.
If any of you saw Who do you think you are by the BBC, the episode with Alistair McGowan explored the history of being british asian in the 1800's, it was very good.
Men in the British Army were encouraged to marry Indian girls in the early 1800's to provide long term community stability, but by approx. 1900 it was discouraged again when India had internal battles.

You are all so helpful and kind here.

Hi Ruth,

I assume you have Thomas's wife Alice and their daughter on 1911, living with the man who she later married?

Also the details of Thomas's will where he left what money he had to the Seamen's mission?

Let me know if not.
