I have recently discovered my Thornton line from Pilling early 1800 and a friends who is also a Thornton from Cockerham early 1800-it looks fairly close on the map, only about 5minutes away,as i am inAustralia.-could we be connected? its a long shot but interesting research-any suggestions to where we would go from here

To show connections you have to research carefully and thoroughly all the family and then see if you end up with a common ancestor.
According to google maps the 2 places are 5 miles away, so they could be connected, yes.

try and find your common ancestor - if there is one, the IGI looks to be quite helpful

trying to connect Thornton families in what is known as 'over Wyre' - Pilling, Cockerham, Stalmine etc is probably a bit like connecting Smiths or Jones families in an area.

Your james probably has 8 siblings

this site is a v useful one for the area

lan-opc.org.uk

unfortunately baptism records for Cockerham itself stop in the late 1600's
