Can someone advise me please? I want to check whether family members served in the forces during 1914-1918 war (or any other time for that matter). I have only names, dates of birth, and place of birth.

What is the best/easiest? way of going about this please?

You can search the National Archives or Ancestry

Flick

Ancestry has the surviving Army WW1 records......but, about 70% were destroyed during WW2.

Take out their 14-day free trial, and do some research.

More recent records are not available except to the NOK........cost £30.00

Why not post one of their names etc on here - for one likely to have served in WW1 ONLY

Check this site to see if any of your relatives were killed in the war:

Thanks everyone. I don't like to post them on here because there are so many!!

I found Ancestry a bit confusing. They talk about 'medal rolls' which presumably only lists those with medals? I'm not sure any of them had medals.... Perhaps I should do the 14-day free trial.

If you want to find them for yourself thats fine but if you do want help, we dont mind you posting as many as you want!

You can search Ancestry service records only but lots didnt survive as Flick has mentioned

Sorry. I'll post them individually. Thanks.

Joan Report 28 May 2011 17:17

Sorry Ginny. I seem to be having a 'slow' problem on GR. I didn't see your message and thought I should post as individual topics. Couple More;

Frederick Brooks Born 1877 Edworth, Beds
John Atliff Brooks Born 1873 Edworth, Beds

Oh dear....not much luck with these either!

Next........ ;-)

Joan

Joan Report 28 May 2011 19:15

Arthur Brooks born 1869 (guess where) - Edworth
Herbert Brooks born 1881 Edworth

They were mostly agricultural workers so may have been exempt from service during wartime?

Gee

Gee Report 28 May 2011 20:08

Joan, nothing showing for them either!

Some of them may have been too old to serve and as you say may have been exempt

Next!

Daniel Percy Brooks born Edworth 1883

James William Clarke born Langford, Beds 1875 (thought I'd give you a change of name).
