Interested in Annie SHIELDS born approximately 1861. Mother of Mary Ann SHIELDS born 3 Sep 1878 at 150 Abbey Street, Derby whilst Annie was a domestic servant for a doctor, but where? Annie eventually married Benjamin TOMLINSON at the Victoria Street Congregational Church on 14 Oct 1888. Family information dictates that the doctor was the father of Mary Ann SHIELDS.

If Annie was born in 1861 she would have been 17 in 1878.
If she was born in 1866 she would have been 12 at the birth?

If Annie married Benjamin Tomlinson in 1888 why is she Sheilds on 1891 census??

Mary Ann in 1881 with Edward and Mary as daughter,but they already had a Mary Jane 1864 also on that census.

I can't find a Annie born to them @ 1861 only a Hannah M born @ 1857.

I think you have got the two families mixed up!!!

Hi Everyone,
Thank you very much for your response to my request about the Shields family. Most of the responses referred to the correct family, but the family with Bethsheba in it I have come across before but regarded it as not correct family. I would still like to know where he was during the 1881 census as she was not living with her parents at 150 Abbey Street, Derby. There seems be 2 alternatives, one at Brighton and the other in Lancashire. Which one is the right one? I was aware of where Benjamin Tomlinson lived and his children but not his foster child, nor the circumstances of his death. I wonder if any of the descendants of Edward Shields are still alive so that I can ask them if they know anything? I did find Edward Shields will in the Derbyshire Record Office, it was dated 1890, but I did not find any reference to the Shields family to 1900 in Derby. However, I did an Electorial Role and telephone search in 2007 and found several people with the surname Shields living in Derby or the surrounding area. I wonder if it is possible to match any of these with my Shields? Thank you again.
