Yes Mike this is him, I have just recently obtained the birth and death certificate of Anne (his daughter) and it was on her birth certificate that I found out his second name was Henry.

Took me a while to realise Russ Street was an address not a name.
Guess it refers to my thread above re : 1881

The 1891 census that Dea and I found had him as a Mason's labourer, not a shoe maker.
Could you copy over the correct census entries?
Thanks.

No probs. Patchem.

I looked at that 'draper' on 1881 too but decided against it.

It would help if Carole would come back and tell us the details from that marriage cert so we at least knew who is father was.

Where does he state he was born in the other censuses?

If his marriage cert lists his father as a soldier then you could well be right and he became an orphan on his father's death. What name does the marriage cert give for his father?

Carole

Carole Report 29 May 2011 18:17

My grandfather was born in 1854 (according to his marriage certificate) the story in the family was that his father was a soldier - this is confirmed on his marriage certificate) but was deceased. William was in a boarding school and the fees stopped being paid. William was transferred to an orphanage (could this mean that his father was killed in action and was the boarding school actually an army boarding school)? On two of the census returns he states that he was born in Aldershot. As this was a garrison town and his father was a soldier I thought this could be right. I have no idea where to go from here. His name was William Mackintosh and on one of his childrens birth certificates it states his name as William Henry Mackintosh. Can anyone out there advise me please ? Confused Carole
