I had actually ordered the marriage certificate for John Bailey to Mary Ann Lane which has come today and his father is down as Edward Bailey - not William unless he was know as William Edward which I have not come across on the census's so still don't think that now solves the mystery of Edward's birth in 1950.

I would suggest that Edward in Jemima's household was probably the son of one of her daughters...........hence his being recorded as her 'son'

Just got marriage certificate for John Bailey and Mary Ann Lane in 1849 and his father is named as Edward Bailey, so William Bailey could not have been this John's father. Still does not solve the parentage for Edward Bailey on 1851 census. Have not yet found a birth for him in 1850 that fits in with the family. Think this might be one of my brick walls! Will carry on looking
