Could someone please have a look under FMP (military records) for John Wynn b.1873 London, Surrey. My husband's grandfather served in the British Army prior to 1914 and while we have all the information about his service during WW1, we know very little about his army life before then.

We think this entry might be the same man but cannot be sure.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks Nicky, this could be him but can't be certain. I wasn't sure what sort of information would be found under the FMP search but will keep a record of what you have found just in case something else turns up to confirm it.

I do know that by the time he went to France in 1914, he was serving with the Royal Fusiliers.

There are 4 pages of records ,he joined up in 1897 and was discharged in 1910. Next of kin is listed as Priscilla fairbrother of Yeomans road Brompton London...then thats crossed out and its Mrs Fairbrother again Coombes road Fulham. London..does this sound like your relative?

If so i can try and save the images and if you want to PM me your email addy I will send them to you.

This is interesting Nicky.

The John Wynn I am researching is more likely to be connected to Shoreditch and my husband recalls a possible spell of duty somewhere in India. He would have been single in 1911 as he married my husband's grandmother on leaving the army during WW1 after being wounded. However, as his name is a fairly common one, we have never been able to ascertain his address in 1911 and there is no known family link to Priscilla Fairbrother.

I have PM'd my email address as you suggest so that we can keep the images just in case a link crops up.

Thanks for your efforts.

Sorry Nicky, my "logging off" message must have crossed your one about the Welsh connection. Although the Wynn family did originate from Wales, John's parents were not the ones you mention and by the time he was born, they were well and truly established in London.

I have just had a look at the document you so kindly emailed me and will certainly investigate this further. I notice that in the top right hand corner there is a pencil entry "Alias Ettridge". I wonder if this is meant to suggest that he used another name at some point? I'm not sure if this is the right man or not but I'll get my husband to investigate further into the military history.

Now I really am logging off! Thanks again for all the info.
