Hi Vera,
Have checked the crew lists on FMP sorry no luck. I would think that there was only one 1911 census which unfortunately doesn't include merchant ships, only Royal Navy ones.

even though i was 12y.o when my g/d died all i remember my mother , his daughter saying about him was he was born in london, i think about1888, as he died in 1960 aged 73, he was about 2y.o and became an orphan, how i dont know, and my mother said some orphans were sent to sea rather than an orphanage, and that my g/d wassent to sea. ive not found a birth certificate for him, i was hopeing the 191q1 census might of given me some clues but iv,e drawn a blank again, thank you all for help/

The occupation is from the image of the census with Elizabeth and young James in 1911. Marine fireman is written in the occupation column against the listing of Husband at Sea. I think marine firemen were stokers?

I presume James age and birthplace as possibly London is from a tree on Ancestry that lists his birthplace as London in 1887/88 and marriage to Elizabeth Parker in 1910, but does not list his father's name.

Vera, if you don't have any other info then how do you know he's your grandfather?

Sorry for all the questions, but if we're to help then we have to have something to go on. We'll try to find the info that you don't have, but you must give us some clues. There is a good reason for the questions, strange as they may seem.

Were there any other children born to the marriage, if so who and when/where?

Do you know when and where your grandfather died?

Regarding the "Marine Fireman" - that is what's written on the census form - there is nothing else.

Are you assuming your granddads year of birth would have been the same as his wifes?

Do you have any record of your granddad James anywhere else?

In order to trace him we need to know as much as possible.

How do you know his name was James?
