Hi Ann of Green cables.

Thank you for quick reply and your research. Yes they are the David Biddle and the Heffer Dhu connection.
I hit a brick wall as Eva does not show up in any of the Dhu records or the Biddle.
I have all their dobs and the Western Aust BDM.
First time Eva shows up is marriage to David Biddle.
Have even checked name and spelling variations especially for the Dhu and William Mitchell connections.
I had thought William Mitchell may have been married previously as at time of marriage to Elizabeth Dhu he was in his 50's. and had been transported to WA 1855 aboard the Adelaide at 25years of age and didnt marry Elizabeth till 1881.
I thought maybe was second husband of Sophia Dent, but still no Eva born to the couple and cannot verify my William as the 2nd husband to Sophia.
Will keep hunting..
ta
Michelle

Are you sure the Eliza MITCHELL born in 1883 is not Eva E? Do you have a marriage and death for her?

I would leave them -- the thing to do is try to trace each of the WMs forward to 1861 to rule out.

Do always identify the source of information. Ancestry trees ... they get the back of my hand, I'm afraid! Unless there's firm, consistent supporting documentation. That one is obviously utter nonsense.

Please do add the information about William's marriage, children and death here. You have that info, we don't.

I think there's no way around getting certificates.

You have solid information for ordering the Mitchell + Dhu marriage certificate, don't you?

Canadian time here, I'm off for supper!

Hi
Sorry for the overload of information, I never know how much or how little to write.
should I delete the census records, as they were from my research based on approx age and proabability of location. but I was unsure once had information how to verify it.
parents William & Margaret were based on a public member tree for William's step daughter Emily Jane Dhu Mitchell, but again not sure how to make sure correct, as I have found a lot of trees have incorrect information.
other parent were from my researching Parish records based on William's approx age and location of conviction and fathers occupation shoemaker.
The Western Australian information is based on a public display at the Fremantle musuem called the Welcome Wall and the Perth DPS convict ships list.
I am also still verfying information in WA regarding marriage and death before ordering certificates because if incorrect they do not refund the fees.
While writing this, see you have answered, regarding Bristol and I have learnt something new a cordwainer is a shoe maker. I have also been searching internet for information on occupations such a clogger, spanish leather dresser as I come across them in the census /birth records.
Help appreciated
Michelle :-)

And then I peered into that dense mass of text and saw the name DHU and knew I had seen it before.

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1269639

Do you not think there is information in that thread that might be useful here?

I do. That's why there's a rule against duplicate threads about one family. So we don't spend time doing what has been done.

You have all the info about William Mitchell's life in Australia that gives context and background, like his marriage and kids. Nobody just reading this thread has it.

This one is started now ... so how about you add all the information you have to it?

"parents William 1801 & Margaret Hodgson 1802 Bristol Somerset died Aston Warwwickshire married 1841 St Phillips & St Jacobs Gloucestershire. 4 children."

This looks like one of those random adoptees into family trees that result from stupid Ancestry "hints", like the one that has 48 people showing my Cornwall grx4 grandparents having a son born 1775 in Tennessee. The name and date fit, so bingo, yes! I'll take that one!

The 1841 census doesn't even really make him the child of those parents! The household in St Philip and St Jacob is in this order:

Mary King 35
John Greening 26 - cordwainer (shoemaker) J
Robert Deer 15 - hammerman J
William Mitchell 11
William Mitchell 40 - lab
Margaret Mitchell 35
Thos Mitchell 9
Margaret Mitchell 5

with actually a line after the younger William indicating a household separation.

The address has another cordwainer as well (I doubt that is the surname, but I can't read it)

Thomas Coreno 55 - lab
Mary Coreno 55
Thos Coreno 20 - cordwainer J
Lucy Coreno 15
Henry Coreno 13

J indicates journeyman, or qualified.

I assume that what you quoted means they were already married in 1841 in Bristol, not that they married that year. It refers to Warwickshire, which I assume to be referring to the parents' deaths, since obviously your William didn't die in Warwickshire. It does suggest to me that this is the William Mitchell in question, in 1861, i.e. not yours:

Name: William Mitchell
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Caroline Mitchell
> Where born: Bristol

Civil parish: Birmingham

William Mitchell 30
Caroline Mitchell 34
William G Mitchell 9
John T Mitchell 7
Caroline Mitchell 6
Henry Mitchell 5
Mary A Mitchell 2
Walter Mitchell 6 MO

I also don't think it likely that someone from Bristol would end up being convicted in Lancaster.

One down??

That's a lot for a stranger to take in, I fear.

Can you say where all this is taken from? What is fact, from official records, and what is conjecture? The only facts seem to be the bottom bit, "Known information"?

The two things at the top, showing different parents and different dates of birth -- they come from different people's family trees?

Do they have records that tie your person to those ones? Obviously one only, since they're mutually exclusive!

Are there records in Australia with actual info like his parents' names, on marriage or death record?

There are sure to be multiple William Mitchells that age-ish in England.
