I am trying to find out how the Mary's last name (cronin) came about. On her marriage, death & her children's birth certificates all say just Mary Holland only, in which she has alot of different spellings of Holland on those certificates. But no Cronin! But when searching her on the web and in certain books her name is Mary Holland Cronin.
Don't know when or where she is born, by her death's age should put her born about 1816. She married John Aiken Jr and there is two different dates some say 1842, but I have a marriage certificate of a John Egan & Mary Holihen married on 19 Jan 1851 at St. Patricks Church, Parramatta, Mary died on 26 May 1884 in Pennant Hills, NSW.
As I can't find a birth record, so thinking she may of been cared for, maybe by Cronin family or maybe the opposite.
Would appreciate any help or thoughts, she is a mystery. Thanks from Jackie

If she married in Australia I suggest including "Australia" in your thread title so that members with access to those records can hopefully help you.

Hi Jackie,
Just having a look at this. For everyone's benefit this is the death record held by the NSW BDM for Mary:
Registration number: 7822/1884 Last Name: Aiken Given Name(s): Mary Father’s Given Name(s): Aged 68 years Mother’s Given Name(s): Died Pennant Hills District: Central Cumberland
It's a bit unusual in that it contains details where the parents normally would be.
On her marriage and death certificates, who does it say the parent's are named as?
There is no matching birth in that name, but that could be because of a number of reasons, I just need a bit more infor from you.
Cheers
Rachelle

Hi,
Now i am a bit confused...
You say she married a John Aiken - I can't find any matching marriage record
Then you say she married a John Egan in 1851 and there is a record for that:
Registration Number: V185112597/1851 Groom's Surname: Egan Groom's Given Name(s): John Brides Last Name at Time of Marriage: Holihen Bride's Given Name(s): Holihen District: LH
There are two entries for the marriage Registration V185112597/1851 and V185112997/1851, which one have you ordered?
Now Mary's death is registered as an Aiken...
So either she married two and one is not recorded (or even 3 times and Holland or Holihen is not her birth surname) or you might be tracking the wrong person. In fact there are 12 marriages with a Groom with the surname Holland marrying a bride with the first name of Mary.
Can you advise what sources you are using? You are talking about her appearing in books, can you advise what confirmed information you have or are using?
Cheers

Hi Lynski, yes she was married in Australia.
Hi AmazingGrace, she was only married once, as the people could not get the Aiken spelling right and the Holland spelling. I feel the marriage is right, I hope......
Smee is an author who called her Mary Cronin, can't remember what book it was (I think NSW pioneer families) The author may have got it wrong with Mary's name.
The sources that I'm using is all Birth/death/ marriage records of John & Mary's children.
cheers

Cheers
Ok!............I just found the certificate and it says Vol 97 No 125 so I asume it's the first record you mentioned.

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) Tuesday 27 May 1884 p 1 Family Notices Deaths AIKEN.-May 24, at Pennant Hills, Mary, relict of the late J. Aiken, aged 68.
Her burial at St Patrick's Parramatta has her as: 2032 AIKEN Mary Holland 78y 25 May 1884, Pennant Hills.
6707/1883 AIKEN JOHN [father] JOHN [mother] FRANCES [district] CENTRAL CUMBERLAND
The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) Saturday 1 September 1883 p 1 Family Notices Deaths AIKEN.-August 25, at his residence, Pennant Hills, John Aiken, in his 71st year. R.I. P.
There are 2 records that seem to relate to John's deceased estate at NSW records online - you can order them for $15 each. See http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/indexes-online#d
You mention children's birth certificates - which are these? I can only see one as EGAN in 1844 and one as AIKEN in 1848, and even these are only possibles. Notably both are before the EGAN-HOLIHEN marriage in 1851.
V1844861 145/1844 EGAN CATHERINE JOHN MARY V1848985 65/1848 AIKEN JOHN JOHN MARY

Have you contacted the person whose tree has her as Holland Cronin from Rootsweb World Connections (Leah)? Her email address is provided.
She should be able to let you know her source for this info. Other chn she has:
V18501615 145/1850 HAIKEN WILLIAM JOHN MARY 9735/1857 AKIN THOMAS JOHN MARY A PARRAMATTA
The has them marrying 1842 at St Patrick's RC in Parramatta but there are no close matches at all in 1842.

The births certificates of John & Mary's Children, I have are Catherine Egan which says b. 22 Feb 1844 Pennant Hills F: John Egan M: Mary Holihed
Frances Ekin b. 3 Jan 1846 Field of Mar, F: John Ekin M: Mary Hollyhead
Emma Ekin (known as Emily) b. 6 Mar 1854 Pennant Hills F: John Ekin M: Mary Holligan
Notice how all the Aiken's and Holland's are spelt differently On John & Mary's marriage certificate it dosen't show any parents names on it. On Mary's death certificate it says d. 24 May 1883 Pennant Hills, aged 68, parents unknown but it says she was born in N.S.W. children of marriage gives: John, Elizabeth, Kate (Catherine), Emily, Thomas & William living
On John's death certificate says d. 26 Aug 1883 Pennant Hills age 71 F: John Aiken M: Frances Rumble (another spelling mistake, it's Randall) spouse Mary Holyhin children of marriage: John, Elizabeth, Julia, Catherine, William, Thomas, Henry & Frances Hope it helps cheers
