Sometimes the parents waited to be married before registering their child as legitimate
or
he could be listed as Cook ?

I don't see a marriage for them. Do you know when/where was born?

Jonesey Report 3 Jun 2011 07:59

Do you know whether he had a 2nd forename?

The birth of someone born on 15th of June could quite legitimately be registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter as well as the Apr-May- Jun Quarter.

The only birth registered in either Daventry or Nottingham registration districts that might be applicable is the one below:

Births Jun 1907
COOK William Archibald Nottingham 7b 438

This presumably is the registration of his death:

Name: William Curtis
Birth Date: 15 Jun 1907
Date of Registration: Apr 1990
Age at Death: 82
Registration district: Leicestershire Central
Inferred County: Leicestershire
Volume: 6

Hello Julian and welcome to the boards.

You can also try putting the name you are researching into the Search Trees box (above in the dark green bar), to see if anyone else has them in their tree. If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner.

Regards. Cx.

I am starting to wonder if William's middle name was really Harvey as I can see no trace of him on Freebmd!

When did maud die? And where did the name Cook come from?

Something is just not sitting right.

If William Jnr was born in 1907 unless he and his mother were not in England or Wales at the time the census was taken then they should appear on the 1911 census but I cannot spot them.

There does not appear to be a birth of a William Curtis (Or Cook) in either of the area's that has been suggested. (Julian sent me a PM stating that the one which I had suggested as a possibility was not correct)

If the 1964 death is Maud she is still using the surname Curtis. Whether she and William Harvey Curtis ever married or not she seems to have retained his surname.

There does not appear to be a birth record in England or Wales of a William Harvey Curtis.

There is no record of a William Harvey Curtis in the 1911 census.

The only Maud Curtis (Wife c1883)~William Curtis (Husband c1875)~William Curtis (Son c1907) family who appear in the 1911 census is one living in Preston. Both the husband and the son have a second name, recorded as James.

Julian,

Do you have a marriage certificate for William b1907. If so does that show his father to be William Harvey Curtis and if so, what is indicated as his fathers occupation?

I agree with Jonesey. We need to re-group! What else do you know for certain, such as a marriage cert as suggested by Jonesey?
Make sure you reply on here Jules rather than sending messages.

I think you need the cert to be honest, otherwise we will go round in circles. Let us know if you aren't aware how to obtain it.

Complete shot in the dark.

William Jnr address when he married in 1931 was Daventry. Maud (Maidie?) died in Daventry in 1964. There is this death of a William H Curtis recorded in Daventry:

Deaths Jun 1928 (>99%)
Curtis William H 70 Daventry 3b 165

Does William Jnr's age shown on the marriage certificate tie in to a birth in 1907?

You could try electoral rolls to see who lived at this address:

william jnr was 24 when married in 1931 so do it does relate to born 1907
i'll check the witnesses name when i get home
the death in june 1928 aged 70 possibly matches williams age looking at the photos of the three of them when william jnr was about 12
how do i go about searching old electoral rolls ?
thanks julian

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 11 Jun 2011 10:48

Old electoral rolls are normally to be found at either the main public library or archive office in the area that the electoral roll covered. They are indexed by address rather than name.

Unfortunately not many earlier ER's are available online.
