I am trying to find out details of an Amelia McEwen and her family. According to her marriage certificate dated 31 Dec 1859 she was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia circa 1839 [age 20] and was a spinster. She was also a member of the Catholic Church. Her father was John McEwen who was The Governor of the Jail in Castlemaine, Victoria Australia and her mother was Mary Ann [nee Croney], The Matron at the Jail. I have tried looking up births for Amelia and her family at NSW State Library but to no avail. Could someone please help me find out about this family in Australia.
Regards
James :-)

I can't find anything for Amelia on the NSW BDM site, not even her marriage.
What was the name of the man that Amelia married?

Have you tried the Trove website which has the old newspapers free to search to see if her or her family are mentioned in any articles.

Hi Gai,
Amelia actually married in 1859 in Castlemaine, Victoria and subsequently left Australia in 1861/1862 with her husband. They both died in Nottinghamshire, England in 1867. Can you please enlighten me about the Trove website?
Regards.

Hi Cherilyn,
Thank you for the Argus article, Could you please tell me where Mary McEwen was buried and who is Amy Davis? Was she Amelia's sister and if so have you any details on her. Her name wasn't mentioned amongst the first names you sent.
Regards
James :-)

The marriage reg is in 1860 (reg 2700) to Robert Clarke MILLER.

Did you see my post above re the possible 1839 NSW birth as MCHUGH? Being so early the cert/baptism may not tell you much but it will confirm parents names and birthplace at least.

Mother Mary's death:

Surname: MCEWEN
Given Names: Mary
Event: D
Father: U
Mother:
Age: 61
Year: 1880
Reg Number: 1587

Possible for her father?

Surname: MCEWEN
Given Names: John
Event: D
Father: U
Mother:
Age: 57
Birth Place: DURH
Year: 1862
Reg Number: 1357

Do you know of any siblings?

Just Google NLA Trove newspaper

Amy refers to Mary as Grandma so she must be her granddaughter.

Not sure where they are buried, can't find a funeral notice at Trove.

Hi Cherilyn,

Ah here she is - her mother Mary Ann must have been Amelia's sister:

Surname: DAVIS
Given Names: Amy
Event: B
Father: Joseph Benedic
Mother: Mary Ann MCEWEN
Birth Place: BEEC
Year: 1864
Reg Number: 19993

Mary Ann McEWEN married Joseph Benedict DAVIS in 1863 (reg 3661).

I wonder if this is her birth then?
V18422456 69/1842 MCHUGH MARY JOHN MARY

It appears they lived in Beechworth. Joseph died in 1868 aged 32; birthplace London, son of Joseph & Eliza (nee HODGES).

I expect it is Durham, UK. Too early to be Durham Lead, Victoria! :-)
