Trying to find the death of my 2xGt Grandmother above.
Married Joseph Dickenson 1875 & was widowed 1879,left with a daughter Margaret Amelia b.1878.
In 1888 Mary Ellen married John G.Broadhurst at Our Lady of Nicholas & St Anne Liverpool.
In 1891c they are living at Milk St Windle St Helens as boarders without Mary's daughter who is with her Grandparents in Wigan.
After that I cannot find them.I do know that John Broadhurst was b.1858 Knighton Radnorshire.
Margaret my Gt Grandmother left Wigan in 1898 & settled in Winton,Eccles for the rest of her life.
Unfortunately I have been unable to track Mary Ellen down after the 1891c. :-S

Did she have any children with John?

bettyespana

bettyespana Report 5 Jun 2011 12:06

Yes,I have this info. The only discrepancy is where John was born.

Mary Ellens parents were John Ball b.1833 Wigan & Margaret Taylor 1831

Johns parents were Isaac Broadhurst b.Leominster & Emma ? b.Ireland

1861c John is in Radnorshire age 3
1871c " " Knighton Workhouse age 13
1881 " " 5 Starkie St.West Derby 22 -Boot finisher
1891 " " Milk St Windle St Helens.

I do know that John changed his name & moved away from Wigan at a later date but I cannot post the circumstances on this board

John moved away at the same time as Margaret 1898/9.

The name of the mother which you have found is Mary Jane & not Mary Ellen.

This makes me unsure.

I think we can deduce why John 'changed his name'

The birthplace info could be a result of mis-hearing by the enumerator. In the area of the census, Huyton would be 'local'. Knighton sounds similar.......especially if the accent was not familiar

Under his 'new name' he claimed in the 1901c to be born Clun in Shropshire.Of course I was searching at the time for the 'wrong' person
& I contacted the authorities, registrars etc for Clun & they had no trace of him.

Then the 1911c came out & it was there that he claimed he was born Knighton. Under his 'new name' he wasn't born there, but John Broadhurst was.
John had used one of his brothers names & changed the surname slightly in his new identity.
Other researches have come to the same conclusion & the connection with the family he lived with in West Derby prior to his marriage to Mary Ellen also ties in.
This along with other things I cannot mention on this board
