Thanks Margee

Well, if they're not to be found on the 1900 census, that just makes me more convinced that they are the right family........if only I could prove it! :-(

In Nottingham 1896.......marriage cert says widower.

I only found out that the 1st wife's name was Mary because Thomas decided to get William and Florence baptised in 1898. lol.

I have all info about him from then on, it's just finding out who he married 1st time and where and when. I also knew about William, Florence and Ernest, but didn't know about any other possible children.

Maybe that Mary and children on the passenger list are not his 1st family, but the names, ages and even middle names for William and Florence are too much of a co-incidence for me to ignore!

Mary

Edit: I know Margee, such a shame isn't it, it really makes searching so much harder without that census. :-(

What we really need here is the 1890 American census but it was destroyed in a fire!

I can't see them on the 1900 American census.

When and where did Thomas marry his second wife, Mary?

Contrary Mary

Hi Margee

Yes, that's the correct Thomas, (should be Hutchinson). We know Ernest was definitely born in USA. We think Florence was too........but all we know about their mother is that her 1st name was Mary. She may have been American or they may have married in UK before going to USA???

We also think that perhaps Mary died soon after giving birth to Ernest, hence why Thomas returned home with the 3 children.

That's why I'm trying to rule in or out that Mary Hutchinson on the outgoing passenger list.........on that passenger list it give Mary and children as English!!

Sorry, I know this is rather cheeky, but are you able to search for that Mary and children in the American census........if they are still in Philadelphia in 1900 then at least I will know they are not the right family.

Many thanks.

Mary

Edit: And the correct Ernest in 1901 with the Hallam family. :-)

The 1901 census has an Ernest Hutchinson aged 6, born Philadelphia. He's an adopted son of Frances Hallam, a widow in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire.

Just found this. Is it Thomas & children going to England?
SS "Indiana" from Philadelphia to Liverpool 1896.
Thomas Hutchington, 32, shoemaker
William, 8
Florence, 6
Ernest, age is in months, hard to read could be 5 months

Info is from Worldwide Ancestry.

Hi all

I would be so grateful for any help please.

I have found the following shipping record for who I believe are my great grandfather's 1st wife and children. Please can anyone help find anymore info about them in America?

They are not on the Ellis Island site (or at least I couldn't find them!), maybe someone else can, and I don't have worldwide Ancestry to try and find them on the census there?

If this is his family, William I think was born in UK, Florence in USA and Eleanor possibly also in USA.
