I have been trying for some time to find my great grandfather, his name is Eaton William Keeling, he was born 1864 in Staffs Wolverahampton. His fathers name is on his wedding certificate is George Keeling. I cannot find his birth registration or baptism/christening anywhere. I would be very grateful for any information anyone has about him.

If his birth was registered it should be on FreeBMD,however there were no penalties for late or non registrastion till 1875.
Have you looked for him on any census?

In 1851 George and Elizabeth had a son George born c1844. He may have been William's (Eaton William) father. That would also make him Samuel Farlow's nephew by virtue of the fact that Hannah Farlow's maiden name was Keeling. They married in 1861.

I wonder what made him feel the need to be baptised at the age of 29. Also strange is the fact that he was baptised in Wolverhampton in 1892 when he had married in Leicester in 1890, was living in Leicester at the time of the 1891 census and presumably lived there for the rest of his life, dying there in 1937.

In my tree I have someone who was baptised at the age of 28 just prior to getting married. He was born in Suffolk but was baptised in London where he was living at the time. I have always assumed that the probable reason for his late baptism was either at the request of either his bride to be or more likely at the request by the minister of the church where he was to be married.

Just spotted your comments Jonesey. I was baptised at the age of 21 - by choice. I had been born into a family of Salvationists where baptism is not recognised. I chose to follow the Anglican path. It CAN happen you know..... ;) Cx

Hi Cyn,

I do indeed know that it can happen but I think that there is usually some incident or event that encourages it during adulthood. It may be a revelation, a change of faith or perhaps maybe some such reason as I thought might be the case with my ancestor.

My comment about Eaton William Keeling was really as much about the fact that he chose to be baptised in the town of his birth rather than where he appears to have been living at the time.

I was baptised shortly after my birth but my wife was not baptised until she was in her late teens. In her case her mother and older sister had begun to attend their local Baptist church and she joined them. All 3 were baptised by full immersion at the same time.

Although I had been baptised, at the time I was due to be married I had become an Atheist but out of respect for my wife to be's views I accepted that getting married in a church meant a lot to her. I felt however that it would be wrong of me not to make my position clear to the minister beforehand. Consequently I went to speak to him well before the wedding and we agreed that the wording of the vows that I would make during the ceremony would be changed slightly from the usual. As a result whilst my wife made her vows to God and me, I made vows to her only. To the best of my knowledge nobody in the congregation ever noticed.

Perhaps as a result of the ministers tolerance plus other events in my life my faith returned.
