G'day Flick,
Thanks.
I sat by the computer yesterday for 5 hours and saw 18 looks,but no replies, so thank you very much for your trouble. His marriage was indeed Church of Scotland from his marriage cert. and I have looked in the Old Parish Records on Scotland's People for his Baptism, but I'm a long way from the appropriate Records Offices. I will not be back home in the foreseeable future.

You have certainly been busy whilst I slept here in Oz. Thank you as well. The marriage is correct for Donald and Margaret and I will now purchase the certificate. The children I fear are still loose, but I have filed them away in case they are family I have not yet come across. Thank you for the effort and renewing my spirit to keep going when you hit a brick wall and your head is fuzzy.

The Parish records would have his baptism....not his birth. I would imagine that the Pariish records are Church of Scotland? If he was of any other denomination, you would probably have to visit the appropriate Records office
Civil registration didn't start in Scotland until 1855

My G. Grandfather Alexander Campbell was born c 1849, from 1851Census listed as a 2 year old with parents Donald Campbell and Margaret Gillies and 4 siblings, at Lional, Barvas, Isle Lewis, Scotland.. Parents correct from his 23.2.1877, Statutory Marriage Certificate to Margaret McLeod, from Scotland's People.
He is in the 1871 Census on Lewis, still with his mother (father dead) and then is over in Scotland at Govan for the 1881/91/01 Census with wife and family.
I can not find his birth in the Old Parish Records on Scotland's People, having trolled through 1848-1855 to no avail. May be they were not registered, but he had ( as far as I know) John, Ann, Catherine, Angus, himself and Margaret as siblings. May be no records kept?
Where do I look next, what have I missed? Thanks Cate.
