I have hit one of those brick walls and cant go back any further on my family tree,can someone please offer some advice.
I am wanting to find out the birth date and parents names of my great grandfather.
I have the following information
Name: John Albert Ernest Johnson
Died:10 Sept 1942 in Adelaide South Australia
Age At Death:68 years
Wife:Margaret Myers
Married:30-3-1895 in Adelaide
Age When Married :22 years
Born: ABT 1873
Fathers Name:George Johnson (on marriage index)
Birthplace:Sydney NSW (On Death Certificate)
I have obtained his death certificate from BDM SA.
I have disgarded the John Johnson born in Wellington.
I have checked the BDM in NSW but there is no John Johnson born in 1873 who's fathers name is George Johnson.
Where can i get any more info on him..PLEASE HELP ME...thanks

Johns death shows his name as just John Johnson. I wondered where you have found the details for the middle names?
You say you have discounted the John Johnson born in Wellington, is this because you have the birth certificate and it doesnt match with the father George?

Do you know the name and maiden name of "John Albert Ernest Johnson" mother!!
Death certs are only as good as the knowledge of the "informant" who is supplying the information about the deceased, and how much he/she knew about the deceased......as John Johnson ( naturally ) has no say in what information is supplied on his death cert. regarding his birth place.
Marriage cert are/shouldbe much more accurate, as the groom/bride are normally of sound mind with the information given.
What does it state as his birth place on his marriage cert?
With a surname like JOHNSON you also have JOHNSONE and JOHNSTON and JOHNSTONE
Do you know if he had siblings.

Thanks for the replies,here are the answers to your questions.
Johns middle names were entered on the birth certificate of one of his sons.
I got hold of the death certificate of John from Wellington and his death date and place of death were different from my John.
Yes i have see Johns marriage certificate and it does not show his mothers name,i have no info at all on his mother.
I dont know if he had any siblings either,all i know about his ancestors is that his fathers name was George which was on his marriage certificate,.
Hi death certificate states he was born in Sydney,but his marriage certificate does not,there is limited info on marriage certifcates from SA at that time.

With so many given names "John Albert Ernest Johnson, its possible he may have been born as Albert John Ernest or Ernest John Albert....but prefered John.
From the A.V.R.I and given his age at time of marriage is correct?

His father could have been a John George Johnson i surpose, but known as George.?

The only other suggestion i can offer is to search early S.A electorol rolls working backwards from his marriage 1895 to when he is not listed in S.A, which would give some indication to when he may have arrived in S.A ( Passenger list /Shipping arrival ) to find which port he sailed from.
This may also indicate wether he arrived in S.A as a child ( with parents ) or an adult. His death cert "should" show how long he has been in S.A
Makes it more difficult without a mothers name, and can only assume its not written on his death cert.
