cant find elizabeth miles c 1838 in census |

No, there doesn't appear to be an Elizabeth miles in the 1881 census. I've even tried to be sneaky and search just for the name Elizabeth of that birth year and birth place, but nothing has jumped out at me. She may have recorded her birth place as just Berkshire, but still tricky :-( |

Hmm. An Elizabeth Gleed did die in Wantage in 1878, aged 44. This would not work out exactly for her birth year, but it is a possibility, Dee. Even more intrigued now! |

And there is a John Gleed in the 1881 Census living in Childrey, Berkshire, who is a widow at the age of 38 |

there is actually a small connection between the name Legge and the Painter family. |

Would you all be satisfied with this conclusion, if you were me? |

Yes, I'm pretty sure it is. A bit more research has confirmed that the widow John Gleed was lodging with the in laws of Elizabeth Painter's niece in 1881. I think this would be a bit of a coincidence? Elizabeth Painter disappears without a trace after 1871, so she either died or got married. There is no death in the area around that time, so I think she got married, and there is only one Elizabeth Painter marriage of the right time in the Berkshire area. :-S |
