good afternoon
I've been trying to establish who an Elizabeth Painter married in the first quarter of 1875. The marriage took place in Wantage, Berkshire, but appears to be recorded on the marriage register in a rather strange manner. Her name is hand written at the bottom of the page and usually the website would show others on the same page, so you could probably work out which one she married. But no such luck in this case. Anyone clever out there, who can solve this one for me please? :-D This is not a close relative, so I do not really want to apply for a marriage certificate.

No, there doesn't appear to be an Elizabeth miles in the 1881 census. I've even tried to be sneaky and search just for the name Elizabeth of that birth year and birth place, but nothing has jumped out at me. She may have recorded her birth place as just Berkshire, but still tricky :-(

Triona,

also consider that she may have died prior to the 1881 census??

Thomas Miles must have married Ann Brooker as patchem found William Gleed's marriage on a different page number........... so that brings us back to John Gleed again.......... he seems to be the only odd one out.

Hmm. An Elizabeth Gleed did die in Wantage in 1878, aged 44. This would not work out exactly for her birth year, but it is a possibility, Dee. Even more intrigued now!

And there is a John Gleed in the 1881 Census living in Childrey, Berkshire, who is a widow at the age of 38

there is actually a small connection between the name Legge and the Painter family.
Elizabeth's niece married a Legge.

Would you all be satisfied with this conclusion, if you were me?

Triona

Triona Report 9 Jun 2011 21:34

Yes, I'm pretty sure it is. A bit more research has confirmed that the widow John Gleed was lodging with the in laws of Elizabeth Painter's niece in 1881. I think this would be a bit of a coincidence? Elizabeth Painter disappears without a trace after 1871, so she either died or got married. There is no death in the area around that time, so I think she got married, and there is only one Elizabeth Painter marriage of the right time in the Berkshire area. :-S

just for info

the reason that Elizabeth appears twice in the freebmd page list is that every entry is 'double-keyed' by 2 different people.

the 1st one typed the surname in upper case and the 2nd one in lower case

when freebmd does its matching process (the entry then appears in bold type) it must match everything as identical including the case in which the entry is typed
