Trying to find George Rigby's birth date, (my maternal gt grandfather). He was born about 1870 in Haydock, Lancs to James and Elizabeth Rigby(nee Swift). He married Mary Ellen WALTON. Think he died 1950's. So far have got 2 wrong birth certificates, and an expensive exercise from New Zealand!

I think this is likely to be his birth as Haydock comes under the Warrington registration district and on the 1871 census he is 11 months old so this seems right:-

Name: RIGBY, George
Registration District: Warrington
County: Lancashire
Year of Registration: 1870
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume No: 8C
Page No: 131

Is this one of the certificates you already have?

Possible death:-

Name: RIGBY, George
Registration District: Darwen
County: Lancashire
Year of Registration: 1952
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 84
Volume No: 10C
Page No: 148

This looks like the family in the 1871 census:-

RIGBY, James Head M 22 1849 Lancashire
RIGBY, Elizth Wife F 21 1850 Lancashire
RIGBY, George Son M 0 1871 Lancashire

Address:
Elephant Lane, Sutton, St Helen

RG number: RG10
Piece: 3867
Folio: 135
Page: 33

James's occupation is Engine Tenter.

Old occupations site gives this as:-

Engine Tenter 1) Oversaw the operation of the steam engine driving factory machinery. 2) Operated woolen mill machinery stretching cloth whilst drying.

George's marriage to Mary Ellen Walton:-

Name: RIGBY, George
Registration District: Prescot
County: Lancashire
Year of Registration: 1890
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912
Volume No: 8B
Page No: 835

I've checked Lancs OPC, and there isn't a baptism for him in Haydock.

I can't see baptisms for his sisters, either.

As the parents' marriage was Registrar attended (or in the Register Office), it is unlikely that they were C of E, which would explain the absence of Parish records
