William Hawkins 1812, Belfast/Donaghadee

Hello, I am trying to trace any relatives of William Hawkins. He married Mary Ann. They came to Plymouth around 1860. Children, William 1833, Anna Matilda 1840, Hugo Francis 1842. William snr was a ships carpenter, Willaim son was a seaman injured in the 2nd Opium Wars and became a gunnery trainer on the shore based "ships" in Plymouth. Hugo, known as Francis was ships cook on HMS Himalaya as well as Victory I. Anna married a Met Police Officer and lived in Plymouth area. Francis ended up in Portsea.

Can't find any children of Anna and William Henry Taylor (1881 has her mistranscribed as Tayor).

It would be useful to find anything about these Irish roots. I think they came from Belfast originally as William son was born Belfast, and the other 2 children in Donaghadee, just up the road.

Some churchyard records form Belfast suggest perhaps some other children were born and died - I think there was a bad measles epidemic at the time. This may be why they moved away.

Any help and/or pointers most welcome.

Thanks for reading.

Yes, thanks, this is my gt gt grandfather. I have details for him once he came over to Plymouth (Mary, William and Francis came first, followed by William snr and Anna.) I did find this mis-transcribed record - ta.

What I think happened is that William son came back from the wars injured and mum and son came over to look after him and when he got the job as a gunnery trainer in Plymouth, father and daughter decided to up sticks and come over as well. Well, it's a good story ;-)

It's finding anything about them in Ireland and ancestors which is/will be difficult. Also, anything about Anna Matilda - I'm surprised there's no sign of any births.

Thanks Ellen,

I have all the above info, but I wonder who has a tree with my rellies on Ancestry? I'm not on Ancestry .. so can't check.

Not sure if the public bath owner would have been my William as he was a Ship's Carpenter and continued in the service of the Navy until he got his pension. Mind you, still not impossible.

Hmmm

The Ancestry trees from what I can see are "public" and I would guess they are mine! So, not a lot of use ...
