Find Ancestors

I'm hoping that there maybe someone out there who might be able to help me. It appears that I'm on a bit of a quest (more so a mystery) in regards to my grandfathers ancestry and I would really love to connect with a living relative that may know the story about my grandfathers family and help me solve this possible mystery or find alternative information that could lead me to clues.

My grandfather was born as George Edward Brodie on the 6 Mar 1911 in Manchester, Lancashire, England (I have a copy of his birth certificate which shows his name as this) and he died on the 28 Nov 1969 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He was born at 280 Victoria Square Manchester. I think it must have been when he came to Australia he used his name as Edward George Brodie (I can't find any records showing how he came to Australia).

His marriage certificate to my grandmother shows his name as Edward George Brodie and he married my grandmother May Boyle on the 28 Jan 1938 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. My mother and aunt have told me that he was called 'Ted' short for Edward. My grandfather enrolled in the Civil Construction Corps on the 4 Sep 1942 and was discharged on the 18 Jan 1943. His registration number was CQ6648 and he was working on Commonwealth Works at Sandy Cape in Australia during this time.

My grandfathers father was John William Brodie born 17 Nov 1878 in Manchester, Lancashire, England and I don't know his date of death and my grandfathers mother was Ethel Elizabeth Black born abt 1883 in Manchester, Lancashire, England and I don't know her date of death either. John William and Ethel Elizabeth were my great grandparents. According to the 1911 cenus my great grandparents had five children born to them but only three were living one of which is my grandfather George Edward, his brother John Robert Brodie born 16 Aug 1906 at 265 Victoria Square, Manchester and died abt Jun 1992 at Barrow in Furness, Cumbria, England. John Robert Brodie married Alice Ann Sale on the 28 Sep 1929 in a registry office at Manchester South, Lancashire, England. My great grandparents also had a daughter Mercia Brodie born abt Jul 1903. It appears that Mercia married an Arthur T W Orchard abt Sep 1922.
John William and Mercia were my grand uncle and aunt.

My grandfathers grandparents (my gg grandparents) were John Brodie born 1853 in Droylsden, Lancashire, England and died in 1892 at Prestwich, North Manchester and Susannah Mary Cunningham born 4 Nov 1846 in Ryde Isle of Wight and died 1919 in Prestwich, North Manchester. My gg grandparents married at the Cathedral Manchester on the 13 Feb 1872 and they had six children in total (including my g grandfather). In 1881 my gg grandfather lived at 16 Hill St Hulme according to the census and his occupation was listed on the census as a painter. On the 1891 census his occupation was listed as a house decorator and he lived at 33 Higher Ormond Street Chorlton Upon Medlock Mancester Lancashire.

My gg grandparents children were Janet Brodie born 1875 at Blackpool, Lancashire and died 1918 at Prestwich North Manchester. James Edward Brodie born 1877 St Annes on the Sea Lancashire. John William Brodie (my g grandfather details in 2 paragraphs up). Charles Frederick Brodie born 1878 in Manchester and died 1897 in Manchester. Susanna Brodie born 1883 in Manchester and Daniel Edward Brodie born 1884 in Manchester.

As I said in my opening paragraph I'm hoping that someone in Genes Reunited may have some information or maybe a living descendent who could possibly help.

I never knew my grandfather as he died before I was born the same with my grandmother so I can only rely on the fact that my mother, aunt and uncle have told me that my grandfather forbid anyone to ask about his ancestry and that he was an alcoholic and a very violent man when he was drunk. My aunt believes that maybe my grandfather grew up in a similar situation of violence and alcohol as these sorts of traumas can carry over into adulthood from childhood.
