Hi Sylvia, thanks for taking your time to reply. I know it sounds daft but i've never believed i'm a child to my mother and every time i've seen a fortune teller she has told me i'm a love child, i've tried to take that with a pinch of salt, however, it does play on your mind when out of all of my siblings I have been disowned and have nothing in common with them xx

Toni

it happens

Births have to be registered within 6 weeks of the birth

maybe the child arrived early, and parents hadn't got a name picked out

maybe they just couldn't make up their minds

maybe .......... and this is sad .............. but maybe the child lived only a very short time, and they wanted to register his birth before registering his death, but didn't have a name.

You will see (Male) or (Female) relatively often as you continue in researching your family

Now, regarding your adoption.

The mother's maiden name (mmn) being on there means that your parents were married (OR, your father, Mr Hoare, had agreed that you should be registered in his name).

Unless you have other information, this does not mean that you were adopted.

The possibility is that this is a second birth registration for you ..................... if you were born under another name and then adopted by Mr and Mrs Hoare, they could re-register your birth in their name. The original certificate could still be available IF you knew what name it was in. But there is no cross-reference from this one to the earlier one.

I think I'm correct in saying that ..... others may know better about the UK system.

Ok, I just found it strange how they didn't have a name that's all. I've always thought I was adopted but it appears not then?! x

GR is not the easiest site on which to look up birth, marriage or death records

This is how your record shows on the site many of us prefer, ancestry.co.uk

England & Wales, Birth Index: 1916-2005

Name: Toni Jennifer Hoare
Mother's Maiden Surname: Scott
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1980
Registration district: Bristol
Inferred County: Gloucestershire, Dorset/Somerset
Volume Number: 22
Page Number: 1278

GR just directed you to the index page from the record book

.... and the entry under yours, the one that has you puzzled was

(Male) Hoare,
mmn Leonard,
registered Leeds
Jan-Feb-Mar 1980

That just means that they hadn't decided on a forename for him!

the transcriber has made a mistake

the name after yours on the GRO index is a (MALE) Hoare born in Leeds

it isn't anything to do with your record

>>>>>edit you all beat me to it!

My birth name is Toni Hoare, I was born 16th January 1980 in Bristol, mothers maiden name Scott. I have just looked up my record on here and was confused by what I found, underneath my name it has unusual info in brackets (Hale) does anyone know what this means? Thanks x
