Travelling with Gypsies? 1861 Census Look-up

Could someone please find a Susan Lee, born 1839 in Baldock, Herts, for me? The '61 is the only census return I don't have for her. Despite the surname Lee, she was not a Gypsy herself, but married into a Romany family in '62. I'd be interested to know if she travelled with them - surname Smith - prior to this. I believe Susan's mum died when she was a child; she was living with a married sister in Norton Street, Baldock in '51, aged 11, working as a Straw Plaiter. If she was travelling with Gypsies, perhaps she won't appear in the census, as they didn't tend to be recorded very well this far back. Good luck!

so I would think that this is not your Susan??

She is a Straw Plaiter though.............

Who did she marry in 1862?

Is this the marriage?

Lee Susan Kensington 1a 68
Smith Bartholemew Kensington 1a 68

Lynnski Thats the marriage I was working with. Pretty sure its the right one as Bartholomew a Chair mender and the parents names fit. I was picking up the Lee family in Norton, Hertfordshire as in your 1851..

Sarah Lou

I have searched and searched but cannot find anything for Susan in the 1861 census as either a Lee or a Smith. She is not with her brothers or sisters with the exception of Mary Ann who I could not find in 1861.

I thought perhaps she may have been with Mr Smith before marriage but no luck. I cant find any census record for Bartholomew Smith before 1871 so perhaps they missed the enumerator in 1861.if they were together at that time.

Vera

Wow! Thanks for everyone's help! I was already fairly confident that Bartholomew wouldn't be found in the '61, as when I had access to the census returns online I'd gone crosseyed looking for him. But I hoped that Susan might. It does rather point to them being together, though - if Susan wasn't travelling, she would have been far more likely to have been 'nabbed' by the enumerator.
Thanks again!
