Find Ancestors

Hi everyone:

I am new to this board, however, I desperately need help finding information on my ggg grandfather and his wife Mary.

My ggg grandfather was Thomas Hele who married a Mary Batten in England. I'm not sure where the marriage took place however, Thomas was listed as a cloth renovator in Plymouth, Devon, England at the time of my gg grandfather Samuel's birth in 1840.
I am attempting to get any information on Thomas and Mary and their children and hopefully their place of marriage or her family.

I know this is a lot to ask. I am so stuck on these people. I have information on all of their children, however, I'm not sure which family is which. There are two Thomas's and two Mary's in Plymouth and I don't know who is who, so whether or not I have the right family information is a mystery to me. Hele was not a popular name, however, the similarities in first names is unbelievabale.

Do you have Samuel's birth certificate ? for his father's occupation ?

or as trees on Ancestry give him as having a sister Cordelia with father Thomas Pinneas Hele ?

The birth certificate will also give his Mother's maiden name:

Yes. I do have my gg grandfather Samuel's birth certificate born in Plymouth, Devon, England.. His father was Thomas Pinneas Hele and his mother Mary Batten.

This is where I get confused. Where did this Cordelia come from? There is more then one Thomas Hele with a spouse named Mary. How do I know which family it is?

I need to thank eveyone who is helping me. I dearly appreciate it.

Cordelia Hele in 1861 census has been changed to heale by someone on Ancestry.

Does your Samuel have a middle name on his birth certifiate??

I don't think the above Cordelia is a relation. I do know that my ggg grandfather was dead when my gg grandfather married. My gg grandfather listed his father as deceased in 1858 on his marriage certificate.

His middle name is not listed on the birth certificate. They did however, spell Thomas, Thos Hele, living on Cambridge Street in Plymouth.

On the Ancestry Tree the parents of Cordelia Hele are given as Thomas Tucker Hele born 28 January 1816 in Cattedown, Devon and Mary and their marriage on 5 October 1837 at Church of Charles the Martyr, Plymouth, England

You could apply for the birth certificate for Cordelia, to find out if she is definitely related, or to help you with her actual parents:

I Think Cordelia is not related as her father Thomas is alive on the 1861 census,

There are several trees with different children and varying dates for their parents so there is not one I would trust !

None have the censuses I found which I believe are right [if spelt wrongly.]

That's my problem. I don't know what to believe with the census records. So my next question is.. how do I find out for sure?
Is there anyway of doing that?

Cordelia I don't believe is a relation since that Thomas is still alive in 1861.

I sort of trust the Hell spelling in the 1851 census since I do know for sure that he was a cloth renovator on Samuel's birth certificate. So, that to me is a clothes cleaner. How many of them could there have been?

I think 1841 census of Hile is your family and 1851 Hell.
It looks as though they are in the same area i.e St Andrews where your Samuel was born.Address is around Russell Street.

Is this his mum Mary 1861.

I have the same feeling that it is the Hile and Hell listing also.

I will have to look into it and see if his mother's name was Mary. There were so many Thomas and Mary's back then. I'm sure there was a reason for it. I will dig a little more.
