Another tip! When you find an entry on Freebmd, cl;ick on the district - it will tell you all about it. The other option is to google 'registration district royston' (or whatever). This can be very useful when searching, especially for areas you are unfamiliar with.

Thanks Jan

I only realised about the 'phonetic' bit this morning - getting old!

I did know about the Royston district finished in 1939 but didn't know where entries went from there. The ancestors involved were actually from Hinxworth (Royston District).

Your info is invaluable - thanks again. It just shows how useful the site is for help!!

Joan, just a quick note - are you aware of the 'Phonetic search surnames' option on Freebmd? Saves having to think up surname variations!

Also worth noting re. Royston registration district -

'Abolished : 1.10.1939 (incorporated into Hitchin and Bishops Stortford registration districts).'

Sorry for delay in replying - phone rang!!

I don't know whether he was alive when Amelia died. I have tried freebmd (all spellings of Brooks I can think of). I think you may be right about the Hitchin link and that may be the answer.

I never thought of looking via the children although I know there son Walter (1894) died on the Somme (found on Roll of Honour for Edworth.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi Jan,

There's a tree on Ancestry, it looks like their daughter died in Hitchin, so I wonder???

Either death could be his, but knowing if he was still alive when his wife died would definately be a help.

Joan, do you know if he was still alive when Amelia died? Just to narrow it down a bit.
Have you checked Freebmd?

I'm trying to trace death record for Arthur. On the 1911 census he was living with his wife Amelia in Royston, Hertfordshire. Amelia died in 1934 (Royston).

Can anyone pick anything up please?
