Looking for relatives of, or information about, the below family -

The West Australian, Friday 30 November 1951
They Are Engaged
FITZGERALD-JORDAN: Mr. and Mrs. G. Harvey, of Clearlands, Mt. Barker, wish to announce the engagement of their eldest daughter, Norma Patricia, to Joseph, youngest son of Mrs. H. and the late Frank Jordan, of 27 Weld street, Claremont.

Norma Patricia JORDAN of Salter Pt died in 2004 aged 77 (b. 1927 Perth as FITZGERALD).

Trying to work out how the Harvey family was connected to the Fitzgeralds...seems to make sense that Norma was a daughter of Mrs Harvey by a previous marriage, but I can't see a HARVEY-FITZGERALD marriage in WA.

I know George was at Clearlands (a farm in Mt Barker WA), but am now confused as to who his wife was.

Maybe electoral rolls would shed some light on who else was on the farm?

Can anyone help please?

Thanks Dee!

I did have that name but couldn't remember how I got it - I actually thought that was his daughter!

Is there anything from earlier?

Hi Dee

The first one I had thought was him, was to Mary Ellen SWALES. It appears she died and was buried in Mt Barker in 1936, though it makes her quite a bit older than George.

This Fitzgerald business has thrown me for a loop!

Oh just found this marriage in the right district - maybe an error of E for F?

Harvey George E Plantagenet 7 M 1939 Newton Hilda C

:)

But Newton, not Fitzgerald!!!

With a Mary Ellen... home duites;

ah that is all adding up now...

except the fitzgerald part :-)

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 16 Jun 2011 11:51

So could Hilda have been married to Mr Fitzgerald, the Newton and finally Harvey??

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 16 Jun 2011 11:56

Well that's the theory I guess!

But still no Newton-Fitzgerald marriage...and since Norma was born in WA that seems the right place to be looking...

Well I have to go cook for the hungry hoardes before they chew my arm off (literally), so will be off for now.

Back later tonight or failing that, tomorrow morning

Thanks for your help so far, Dee!

From MCB WA

First Name HILDA CONSTANCE
Last Name HARVEY
Aged (Years) 86
Date of Death 09/04/1981
Suburb CLAREMONT

so born c1894

WA births
NEWTON HILDA CONSTANCE [f] FRANK [m] ROGERS SARAH PERTH [reg] 1875 [year] 1893

MCKAY HILDA CONTANCE [f] JOHN [m] THOMPSON MARY ANN PINJARRA [reg] 740 [year] 1894

Hilda C McKAY married Francis MADIN in 1936, so that discounts her.

From penfriend requests in the newspaper, Norma Fitzgerald was at Clearlands by 1939, the year George & Hilda married. So she MUST be Hilda's daughter. Very odd. I can't work it out.

Hi Helen

I guess so, though that isn't usual is it? Unless they lied about being married...the other idea I had was that she was a sibling's child, but that hasn't panned out either.

Or a foster child?

Also it states in the notice 'eldest daughter' indicating there were others (or it would say 'only daughter', or just 'daughter')...

I might try to contact some Jordans just to see if I strike it lucky!

Hi,

I lloked at the Australian Electoral Rolls, 1903-1954 for Hilda........ now the closest match I could find as Hilda Fitzgerald was this;

Australian Electoral Rolls, 1903-1954
about Hylda Constance Fitzgerald Name: Hylda Constance Fitzgerald

Electoral Year: 1931
State: Western Australia
District: Swan
Subdistrict: Toodyay

Then there is also; David Fitzgerald; Lake Brown. Railway Construction.

about Hilda Constance Fitzgerald Name: Hilda Constance Fitzgerald
Gender: Female
Electoral Year: 1936
State: Western Australia
District: Swan
Subdistrict: Beverley

White Street, Brookton, Home Duties.......... no other Fitzgeralds with her.

Australian Electoral Rolls, 1903-1954
about Hilda Constance Newton Name: Hilda Constance Newton

69 Aberdeen Street.... shop assistant....... Also SARAH at this addres, her mother???

Well that makes sense, that is who I thought her parents might be.

The dates do seem to add up - she is single in 1925, and then by 1931 is with a David Fitzgerald, and then by herself again in 1936, to remarry in 1939.

So my theory now would be that she married David FITZGERALD between 1925 and 1927 (the year Norma was born), then divorced him by 1936 and went back to her maiden name when she married George....or maybe they were never officially married? I can't see his death nor their marriage, nor is their divorce in the papers...can you see David FITZGERALD in the rolls by himself in 1936? Maybe still in Toodyay district?

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 17 Jun 2011 09:44

starting to sound like a good theory to me.

This is the only David I can see that may fit;

Australian Electoral Rolls, 1903-1954
about David Fitzgerald Name: David Fitzgerald
Gender: Male
Electoral Year: 1943
State: Western Australia
District: Fremantle
Subdistrict: Fremantle

Address 47 South Terrace, labourer.

No other Fitzgeralds at this address

They are a frustrating lot! My brother-in-law won't fork out for any certs - he is interested but not THAT interested. I have already paid for one marriage cert for George's brother, which turned out to be no help at all (George and his brother were orphans).

Anyway I have found a possible JORDAN family member so will give that a try and see of they know anything...I will keep you posted! (pun intended) :-D
