Wallis/Wallace, Sarah

I've hit a stumbling block in my tree and wonder whether anyone can assist. There were two births registered in Teesdale, (birthplaces Staindrop) both for John William Ling, both born 2 July 1876, one with the mother's maiden name as Sarah Wallis and the other with the name Sarah Wallace. I've also received information of the baptism of John William Linge on 25 JUNE 1876 so I suspect that what I've been told as a child - that my grandfather was born on 2 June (not July) may have been correct and one of the births was listed as 2 July to avoid any clash with legalities of registering within 45 ? days. My cousin hopes he's not been chasing the wrong line.

Can anyone shed any light on this or has anyone come across this happening before?

Quite common to lie about a birth date when registering late.....

And the double entry may simply reflect that the mother didn't know how to spell her surname.........so the registrar put a couple of versions.........

I assume that you have checked that there were not two marriages......and that you have looked for your family members in 1881?

Flick

Flick Report 17 Jun 2011 16:35

If you have the baptism info, you must know the father's name...........

This seems very familiar.......have you another thread on the subject?

This is familiar because I've been trying to trace John William Linge before and assumed that 'my' JWL's mother was surname Wallis.

However, I've spoken to the Bishop Auckland Registry which covers Teesdale (Staindrop) and there are indeed two separate birth certificates winging their way to me; one with the father, William (mmn Wallace), and the other, John (mmn Wallis).

This is why I'm now tracing Sarah Wallis/Wallace to see which one could be 'mine' because my cousin who started this branch family history assumed it was Wallis - now neither of us is sure!

The Registrar has never encountered this situation before and she has kindly offered to dig further, eg deaths etc.

This is the Sarah Wallis connected with my other thread, Sarah Linge.

I've assumed that Sarah Wallis's parents were George and Mary Ann (nee Day). I may be wrong.

Hello again Joyce - you really need to add this request to your previous thread (link above from Joseph.)

JoyLouise

JoyLouise Report 25 Jun 2011 16:09

Sorry, MarieCeleste, thought as Linge was paternal side I'd keep it separate from Joseph (maternal side).

Should I put all of my requests onto one thread?

MarieCeleste

Joyce, in this instance - yes. They relate to the same family and the info cross references.

My Sarah Wallis (b abt. 1850 in Essex) died in the Auckland, Durham in 1878; I bought a copy of her death certificate.

However, I'm not sure of her parentage. She married John Linge (b abt 1847) in 1869.

I always thought her parents were George and Mary Ann but someone's cast doubt in my mind by asking whether her parents were actually George and Fanny.

Can anyone help with Sarah's parents, please?

My Sarah Wallis married John Linge in Essex in 1869. I have most family details, eg children and John's second marriage.

I also have my Sarah's death certificate - she was 28 and died in 1878, death registered in the Auckland District, Durham but because there are more than two Sarah Wallises born between 1848 and 1852 in Essex I have not bought any birth certificates.

I was hoping that someone would know (probably from marriage details) whether Sarah's parents were George and Mary Ann - he had two wives called Mary - or George and Fanny)... I don't want to go to the expense of buying a few birth certificates if it's still unclear which Sarah Wallis married John Linge.

Incidentally, I still have a buckshee birth certificate for John William Linge son of William and Sarah Linge (formerly Wallace), born 2 July 1876. Anyone who claims him as theirs can have the certificate.

Think I've got the Linges sorted back to the 1770s - thank you to all.

But which is my Sarah Wallis?

To compound matters, I've discovered James Linge married a Sarah Willis and I know nothing about her yet.

These Linge lads must have loved the sound of Sarah Wallis/Willis.

Yes, I know, Mel Fairy Godmother but ...

I was hoping that someone with my or one of the other Sarahs in his/her background would point me in the right direction for how would one tell which parentage one's Sarah had with only the father's name?

Three sets of parents:

George and Mary
George and Mary
George and Fanny

Now do you see my dilemma?
