Do you have the marriage cert for Mary, that should name her father? Might help with tracking her?

When was Elsie born?

As Helen says, are you sure you have the right parents?

Assuming you are certain of the COWLEY--KELLY-SNOOK marriage as 'yours'...or is she the one who married Tuhi Arekatera
CARTER?

Archway (NZ archives online) has one record for KELLY-SNOOK -

Hamilton Probates
KELLY-SNOOK Agnis Rebecca - Hamilton - Married Woman (1970)

also this - in a Register of Unclaimed Monies in the Victoria Government Gazette 1961 (Australia) -

Kelly-Snook, Mrs Agnes Rebecca, 58 Graham-street, Hamilton East, New Zealand

Does this address ring any bells?

Cherilyn Report 19 Jun 2011 04:50

1922/7298 Agnes Rebecca Norris [m] Thomas Alfred Kelly-Snook
1922/5680 Ethel Lillian Evangeline Trimble [m] John Percival Kelly-Snook

These may be brothers of Elsie May Kelly-Snook who married Wm COWLEY in 1919?

Aha! NZ births with surname as Snook, and Kelly as given name - including Elsie May born 1886

1879/420 Snook William Frederick Kelly
[mother] Mary Jane
[father] Thomas Kelly

1880/19257 Snook Frances Evelyn
[mother] Mary Jane
[father] Thomas Kelly

1882/1090 Snook Alice Maude
[mother] Mary Jane
[father] Thomas Kelly

1884/11417 Snook Thomas Alfred
[mother] Mary Jane
[father] Thomas Kelly

1886/14549 Snook Elsie May Kelly
[mother] Mary Jane
[father] Thomas Kelly

1889/7423 Snook Francis George
[mother] Mary Jane
[father] Thomas Kelly

1891/16836 Snook John Percival Kelly
[mother] Mary Jane
[father] Thomas Kelly

Parents' marriage:
1877/831 Mary Jane Armstrong [m] Thomas Kelly Snook

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 19 Jun 2011 05:04

Father's death -
1891/3359 Snook Thomas Kelly 37Y

Mother's death?
1935/21559 Snook Mary Jane 78Y

My thinking is that the marriage Helen found first -
1907/2050
Elsie May Kelly-Snook
Joseph Henry Silva
- is the Elsie born 1886

Hold the phone! here's a divorce record from 1909 -
SILVA Joseph Henry - Elsie May (Auckland)

and 1961 probate (Auckland)
SILVA Joseph Henry - Auckland - Retired Groundsman

...so assuming she returned to her maiden name, the 1919 marriage could be her...tho' I would then have assumed she had no chn from 2nd marriage!

If it is the Chambers-Kelly family you do need, I followed the notation of her birth in NSW. No Mary L Chambers birth c1874 in NSW. So looked for a marriage of Mary to Chambers and found...

6531/1893 CHAMBERS WILLIAM C [[m] COUCH MARY L [in] SINGLETON [NSW]

Then from here found this NSW birth...

15191/1874 COUCH MARY LOUISA
[father] THOMAS
[mother] JANE [nee BOWDEN]
[district] MUSWELLBROOK

Wm & Mary had 2 children, both born in Singleton NSW
Wm T J 1894, d. 1894
Mabel A 1895

Apparently Wm died in SA in 1895.

Possible NZ marriage for Mabel?
1915/2084 Mabel Annie Chambers Arthur Caleb Wakelin

1963/42929 Wakelin Arthur Caleb 71Y

Christchurch probates
WAKELIN Arthur Caleb - Tinwald - Contractor (1963)
WAKELIN Mabel Annie - Ashburton - Widow (1975)

Cherilyn Report 19 Jun 2011 10:05

The Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday 26 August 1899
CHAMBERS v. CHAMBERS.
Mr. Ash (Messrs. Thompson and Ash) appeared for petitioner, Mary Louisa Chambers, formerly Couch. This was a petition for a divorce from William Collins Chambers on the ground of desertion. Petitioner said she was married at Singleton in April, 1893, according to the rites of the Wesleyan Church. One day she went to Newcastle, and there there saw an advertisement in the paper and returning home found the furniture all sold. She slept with her infant on the floor and had to beg food from the neighbours. Respondent declined to depart from that state of life, and after a fortnight, petitioner went home to her people, and on the following day took a situation as domestic servant. She went to her husband again and asked him to make a home for her but he declined to do so. His Honor granted a decrea nisi and gave petitioner custody of the child ; respondent to pay costs.

spiderlegs, are you in NZ or Australia?

You might have to order probates at Archway to get further. These can only be viewed at the archives.
