Isle of Wight County Lunatic Asylum

History ? Historical Buildings ? Isle of Wight County Lunatic Asylum

1. The first indication of the building being mapped is set at 1898, however was built in 1896 previously to this the "insane" were held at Carisbrooke Lunatic Asylum was and then moved to Knowle Hospital at Fareham, before the Island had its own asylum built at Whitecroft in 1896

2. Idiot starved to death in the Isle of Wight Workhouse. Such a headline as that above would today caused uproar, not only because the cause of death but for the language used, but in 1877 it was quite common indeed even around 20 years later when the Asylum was opened up.

Hi

One of my ancestors Rose Crooks was admitted to the Stanley Asylum in Wakefield in 1867. I have obtained her record from there and it states that she had been in the Isle Of Wight Asylum 22yrs ago (which is circa 1845). The family where living there around this time due to her husbands army career.
The question i have is that i can't find any info on an Isle of Wight Asylum from that date (1845). I found one called Whitecroft Asylum but that didn't open until 1890

Any help much appreciated
Thanks
