Please help find John Bowcock?

Hi, I have received the marriage certificate for my great great great Grandad James Bowcock and it says he was 39 at the time of his marriage in March 1850, which gives him a birth year of around 1811.
His father's name is given John Bowcock , a 'dresser'., my great X 4Grandad.
I'm assuming a birth at least 16 years before his son James was born, but haven't turned up anything solid here at GR. Could you please help me find him, I 'm pretty sure it will either be Salford, Manchester, Prestwich or Chorlton areas (Lancashire).
I know the rule about quick replies to any help, but right now I must leave and will return in about 30 minutes. I appreciate your help.

Thank you Lindsey, it;'s my fault I worded my request badly, it is Jame's father John Bowcock's birth I am looking for, and possible wife etc.

I already have the same JAmes Bowcock details that you found above and yes Ann was James' second wife.

I think you have found the correct John in your first post, as the mother is given as Charlotte in your babtism entry and James went on to name his daughter Charlotte. It looks promising...thank you.

Any possible birth or census entry for his father John would be great..thanks again.

Joe

Joe Report 18 Jun 2011 14:28

Thank you Helen, that is Jame's first wife Elizabeth who died.

Joe

thank you very much Maddie. I turned up a John Bowcock 45 in the 1841 census, the other hardly legible though apart from a Betsy.

I don't know if the other sites would turn up anything more legible?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 18 Jun 2011 15:52

Joe, might this be the 1841 in question?

BOWCOCK, John M 45 1796 Lancashire < Fisherman?
BOWCOCK, Elizabeth F 30 1811 Lancashire
BOWCOCK, Mary F 4 1837 Lancashire
ROYLE, Betsy F 20 1821 Lancashire

** Not sure how the transcriber recorded that from such a faint image. Not sure, but think surname on original might be Bowman.

Joe

Joe Report 18 Jun 2011 16:12

Yes, MarieCeleste that is the same one, though you seem to be saying perhaps the transcriber got it wrong. I agree with you it looks more like Bowman not Bowcock.

Would it be possible instead then to check for a marriage for a John Bowcock around the time of James' birth in 1809, in Lancashire perhaps?

MAybe looking a few years before in case he wasn't a first child?

Thanks!

Joe

Joe Report 18 Jun 2011 16:17

I think John's wife might be called Elizabeth, and he was a Fustian Dresser.

(not a fussy dresser). :-)

Joe

Joe Report 18 Jun 2011 16:33

That second one looks more promising, thank you Maddie, though

it doesn't fit with the babtism given up top , where James's Mum is Charlotte.

So maybe the Babtism is wrong or maybe the marriage. In every census James' birth date is given as 1811, now that would fit this last marriage you have posted for his father John, and the Cathedral fits too as James was also married there I believe.
Thanks for all your efforts!
