Peter Report 22 Jun 2011 21:10

Hi there,

I am looking to see my relation Mary Sarah Gatenby (born 1858 in Newby Wiske, Yorkshire) in the census. I have her before she married, and I believe I have found her marriage here:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Sep 1888 (>99%)
Boddy Hannah Thirsk 9d 596 Scan available - click to view
GATENBY Mary Sarah Thirsk 9d 596 Scan available - click to view
Jefferson John Thirsk 9d 596 Scan available - click to view
WILKINSON Mary Thirsk 9d 596 Scan available - click to view

However, there is only one groom listed and as he does not appear with Mary in 1891 I assume he married one of the other ladies. How can I find out who married Mary Sarah Gatenby?

Thank you,

Peter

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 22 Jun 2011 21:29

Usually I look at the quarter concerned in that registration district and you usually find some reference numbers incomplete amongst the names on the list which helps sort things out. On this occasion however that does not seem to be the case but obviously as there is an odd number (33) of names who married, the list on Freebmd is incomplete.

That trick having failed I tried to find her on the 1891 census using just her forename + birth year + birthplace. Once again no joy.

In order to discover who she married it may then be necessary to obtain a copy of her 1888 marriage certificate which can be ordered from www.gro.go.uk using the index reference number that you have.

Hi there, and thank you. Ann, that is not her parents but thank you. Her mother died young and she was raised by her grandparents.

Oh I feel quite clever; Jonesey, I tried the trick with the 1891 census and came to the same conclusion as you.

I suspect she married in Newby Wiske so I will look up the marriage there in Northallerton on my next visit.

Thank you also Slug and Lettuce; help much apprecaited.

And Staffslass thank you also; you seem to have found her death. Real shame.

Can you spot Charles Boddy in the 1891/1901? I would like to know if Mary had any children.

Thanks,

Peter

Looks like he remarried by 1901 to a Matilda Walker in 1895.

Hello Staffslass, yep.. looks like we have a snap!! :-D

Peter Report 22 Jun 2011 23:04

How sad. But From new research I know that Mary Sarah Gatenby had a great uncle living in Azenby in both 1881 and 1891, so there was a family connection before Charles Boddy was living in Newby Wiske.

Amazing.

If possible can you post the 1901 and 1911 for him?

Thanks,

Peter

Wow, thank you for discovering this for me. I am not directly related to Charles or Matilda, but it is interesting to see what became of them after his first wife died.

Can you possibly find their deaths?

Thanks again!

Peter
