Hi Rhonda.

According to various shipping references the "Nuddea" arrived in Queensland in November 1883. Is this the port you are interested in?

Queensland have a A - Z Indexes ( Pasenger Given and Surnames ) - Immigration 1848-1912...and quite handy if you are lookinfg for a specific person.

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp

If you require the whole passenger list:
Costs and Ordering
The cost for each ship requested is $12.50. For this fee you will receive a copy of the entire passenger list.

Hi Rhonda.

Still looking to see if there is a passenger list for the Nuddea
If you contact the Queensland State Archives they may have more info?

Did perhaps your information come from this article!
Came across this article while searching

I noticed that this presentation was prepared by a Victor VELLA
A decendant perhaps!!

Migration to Australia started from Malta in an organised fashion in 1883. The first group of Maltese citizens to come to Australia were 70 labourers who came to work on the canefields in Queensland. I inform the honourable member that, in addition to the 70, there were nine stowaways

The Nuddea, the ship that they came on, was an old steamer with sails. At that time there was with them a Fransciscan priest, Father James Ambrose Cassar. Father Cassar was born in 1849 and, of course, that made him 34 when he came to Australia. He travelled with this group of migrants who settled in northern Queensland, at Townsville and Mackay.

These presentations were prepared by""" Victor Vella,"""" which is a typical Maltese name, and Mark Caruana . I would like to think that this House and this nation will take the opportunity to say thank you to the Maltese people for their fine contribution.........

Was it possible he was one of the 9 stowaways?

Trove NLA ( Newspaper Article )
The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864-1933) Wednesday 9 January 1884

REPORT ON THE NUDDEA.
"The Immigration Board having, in terms of instructions from the Honourable the Colonial Secretary, held an inquiry into the manner in which the steamship Nuddea was fitted for emigrants, and into certain other matters connected with the carriage of emigrants by that vessel, have the honour to report
as follows -
" The inquiry originated in a report to the Colonial Secretary, dated the 10th of December, 1883, made by Dr D F Macdonald, who was in medical charge of the nuddea on her îeccnt voyage from Glasgow to Brisbane, via the Northern ports, with '17th clause' îmraigrants........

Hi everyone thanks for your help sorry for not providing enough info.
The only info I have is from his Antonio Vellas death certificate he died in 1909 in Sydney at age 51. the section on the death cert, where born and how long in the australian colonies says Tarxien Malta 26years in NS Wales, which makes his arrival 1883 and I have been told the nuddea was the only ship that brought maltese to australia in that year. His wifes death cert says she died in 1936 was here 43 years so she arrived with their son who was 10 in 1893, their names are Evangelista and Michael Vella. hope this helps Rhonda

Hi Rhonda.

I cant see a list ( on the net ) regarding the 70 Maltese passengers on the Nuddea for 1883.

As a suggestion, it may be of benefit to contact the QLD State Archives to see if they have in their archives "Ships Manifest" on the NUDDEA.

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/

NUDDEA Arrived: 15/11/1883 Port: Brisbane from Glasgow Depart:02/09/1883 Source: PL Film: M1700 Immigration Dept: (imm/118) .......... via Cooktown & other Ports south to Brisbane.

Just to add....there is a newspaper article
The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954) Monday 1 November 1909 regarding your great grandfather...Antonio Vella, if its of interest.

Best wishes.
