Find Ancestors

I have been researching my Dace family and have been trying to find out what happened to my GG Grandfather David George Dace. I wonder if anyone has any ideas as to how I could get past this brick wall?

David George Dace was born 28/1/1865 in Clerkenwell, London. He married Catherine Ellen Pole in 1885 in Shoreditch. They had 2 sons, David Thomas in 1885 (born in West Ham, Stratford, Essex) and Albert Ernest Dace born in 1893 who died the same year.

On the 1891 census Catherine is shown as being “separated” from her husband, and is living with their son David Thomas at 92 Nicholas St, Shoreditch. Also living with them is her mother (another Catherine) who bizarrely is also listed as “separated” from her husband (Peter Pole). I can find no mention of David George on the 1891 census or any subsequent ones.

When Albert Ernest is born in 1893 the birth certificate shows his parents as living at 64 Minton Street, Shoreditch. This may have been the address of just one of his parents or they may have got back together.

2 years later in 1895 Catherine Ellen marries again to George Turner, and the banns say that she is a widow. This may of course be untrue – (she also says her father Peter Pole is dead, but his is alive and well at the time!)

I would love to know what happened to David George. I have not seen anyone else giving their marital status as "separated" before. I can find no death certificate for him. I have looked on passenger lists and prisoner lists but no luck there either. I have looked at his siblings but can’t find him living with any of them. Any ideas?

So when son David marries he states that his father is a Book Binder, not listed as deceased;

Yes, that's it. I have the certificate. The other strange thing is that when their son David Thomas is born it says his birthplace is Albert square in Stratford, but gives his mother's address as Forest Lane - not far away, but they may have even not been living together when they had their son.
